This rush to share the 'secret letter' with the cabinet and some journalists came after it became clear that the prime minister had lost his majority in the National Assembly (NA) following the MQM-P's decision to support the joint opposition in the no-trust resolution against the prime minister, according to Dawn.

A key ally of the PTI government in the Centre, the MQM-P has seven seats in the NA and after its decision to part ways with the government, the opposition has gathered the support of 177 MNAs, five more than the 172 required to gain a majority.

U.S. diplomats meet with Pakistani politicians

On March 31, 2022, a report was presented to the Prime Minister about the politicians and journalists who met with the U.S. diplomats since October 2021, according to the ARY news anchor Arshad Sharif.

Here is the detail of US diplomats meetings with Pakistani opposition political leaders as well as renegade MNAs of the ruling PTI of Imran Khan:

On October 14, 2021 Maryam Nawaz met with the U.S. Charge' d'affaires, Angela Aggeler, at her resident in Jati Umra. No statement was issued about this meet as to what was discussed in this meeting.

The same day Angler met with the opposition leader in the National Assembly, Shahbaz Shareef, at his residence. Nobody knows what was discussed in the meeting.

On January 12, 2022, US Consul General Mark Stroh met in Karachi with the Chief Minister of Sindh province Murad Ali Shah.

US diplomats also met with the Muslim League (Nawaz Shareef) leader Rana Tanweer, PP leader Syed Naveed Qamar, MQM leader Kishwar Zehra and PTI's renegade MNA Raja Riaz.

U.S. Charge' d'affaires, Angela Aggeler, also met with the following journalists in the second week of March: Asma Shirazi, Sania Bashir, Maria Imran, Nayyar Ali, Sara Hasan and Fahad Hussain.

On February 26, US Consul General Mark Stroh met with Shery Rehman.

On February 24, US Consul General Mark Stroh met with Bilawal Zardari Bhutto's advisor Haris Gazdar and Chief Minister's advisor Nisar Ahmed Khoro.

On February 16, 2022, US diplomat Peter Joseph Moshery met in Islamabad with renegade MNA of PTI Noor Alam Khan.

On February 15, US Consul General met with MPA Rana Mehmood, MPA Ataur Rehman, Rana Shahidul Hassan and MPA Mian Sadiq and former MPA Rana Tahir.

On February 11, US Consul General Mark Stroh met with Dr. Asem and Syed Tariq Mustafa.
