The entity of human history called "media" have reported it all wrong. The Messenger is not resting in the dunes nor is he resting on the property of the resort where he was found. No one wanted him. They could not burn him, and he was too big to move a great distance. They thought they could hide him, but sand and time reveal a great, growing depression in his image. It was impossible to drag his body into the Gulf of Mexico in the same manner in which the executioners threw Joan of Arc's entrails into the Seine. Human interests fear his memory as much as the Inquisition feared the memory of the Maid of Orleans. It was declared that there should be no reason for a shrine to stir memory and emotion.
But the Messenger has a friend. A deficit of poetry and dreams in the human mind requires a belief that She does not exist, but people saw Her crying over the Messenger's resting place. There is talk in the coffee shops, restaurants and bars where patrons gather in fear to escape the suffocating beach air. They speak in hushed tones and whispers about Her. Civic leaders, when asked, say it is nothing more than a rumor--a ghostly sighting. But the pure of heart know that it is true.
The Messenger's friend is half fish and half human. She is known and has been seen in all cultures throughout the world. She and her sisters appear during great catastrophes. Sometimes they are helpful and sometimes angry. In Roman times her sisters sank ships, Odysseus was called by them, and Columbus wrote that he saw them swimming off the coast of Haiti.
The Mermaid was last seen roaming the barrier island waters during the full moon of August. Incredibly, she managed to crawl up the beach to the high tide line and was crying at the grave of the Messenger, begging that someone help her.
Her sisters are waiting and watching.
