Republicans do seem to have at least some minimal standards. The series of sex-related charges against Herman Cain helped burst his polling bubble. And in the end, the Repubs will probably nominate a man whose one marriage looks solid (even though evangelicals are appalled at Romney's LDS belief that the potential future First Couple will someday become the God and Goddess of their very own planet). And the same theocons deprecate the sitting president whose family life could hardly be improved upon.
Reagan, McCain and Gingrich expose that the vehement advocacy of family values by the right is much more superficial and calculated than they want to let on. Conservatives can be highly tolerant of the sins and errors of their own as long as they reckon that the politician offers sufficient positives to warrant the support even when it comes to the occupant of the executive mansion. The good news is that this is to the considerable benefit of the left. That the conservative minority keeps offering up such morally flawed candidates and then whines when others point out the contradiction comes across as cynical hypocrisy to the rest of the population that refuses to swallow the right's self-serving line on why all should forgive and vote for repentant conservatives.
Of course the opposite is true. Because it is conservatives who vehemently hold up their values as being the very best, they should be expected to adhere to these values, and when they fail to do so they should withdraw from public service. When they don't do so voluntarily, voters should send the duplicitous conservatives packing.
