We have now been in Afghanistan more than 17 years - the longest war in the history of the United States.

We have troops in Syria under questionable authority and this administration has indicated that they may broaden that effort even further.

There should be no issue of more importance to members of Congress than the question of when it is appropriate to send the young people of our country into harm's way, knowing that some of them may not return alive.

And it should also go without saying that every armed conflict that the United States engages in must be lawfully approved by Congress.

I believe, along with my colleagues who have introduced this legislation, that Congress has not declared or authorized military force in Yemen, and as such our involvement is unconstitutional and unauthorized. It is my view that, without that authorization, our engagement in Yemen should be restricted to providing desperately needed humanitarian aid and diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict.

Please sign my petition if you agree: "It is long past time for Congress to exercise its constitutional authority on matters of war, and that if the United States is going to participate in the Saudi-led war in Yemen, there must be a debate and a vote. Otherwise, our involvement is unauthorized and unconstitutional, and it must end."

I believe that as we get closer to a debate and a vote on this issue it's imperative that Congress know the American people are paying attention. So your voice means a lot. Thank you for making it heard.

In solidarity,

Bernie Sanders
