The mother of one of their nephews and nieces had herself fled from such persecution for her life some years back and has since received asylum in the USA. (She now lives in Georgia and is trying to get her boy out of the country.) The nieces and nephews of this couple whom we were visiting have relatives who still live in Eritrea where they are often under constant persecution due to their religious beliefs and practices as Protestant Christians. "There are containers set out in the desert by the government of Eritrea where persecuted Eritreans are too often sent to do work camps and sometimes to die, especially if they try to escape punishment."
Our friends in Ballwin had heard that their nephew had been caught in gunfire between smugglers and the government of Eritrea at the border a few days earlier. They were waiting to hear whether their nephew was alive and if he was--Was he captured by the government? or Was he able to flee over the border to a neighboring country?
I called my friends in Ballwin a day after our visit to the Eritrean-American family (after my family and I had traveled on to Carl Junction, Missouri where we were visiting my mother's). Sadly, the news from the border of Eritrea was mixed-to-bad.
The nephew was alive but he had been captured by Eritrean forces.
Please pray for the boy back in Eritrea--and for other victims of persecution from around the world--even here in the USA where there should not be such persecution at all if people really loved their constitution.
