Mayor Bill de Blasio's office hastily canceled an afternoon announcement and bill signing at City Hall amid reports from multiple news outlets that a Staten Island grand jury had opted not to indict a police officer in the death of Eric Garner.
Recent history shows that may not be enough, nor will de Blasio's promise to outfit NY police officers with body cameras likely be the end of things. Neither is president Obama's statement:
President Obama reacted swiftly to the grand jury decision, saying it underscored the frustrations that many African-Americans felt about their treatment by the police and a legal system that they believe is stacked against them.
