The genius of Zemmour and Orba'n is to have dismantled the legitimacy basis for liberal democracy in the eyes of large sections of the national people. Indeed, only an illiberal democratic restoration of the majority will can prevent the new tyranny of people's replacement and destruction. Consequently, the people must choose between "living and together." If liberal democrats choose 'together,' balancing rights and interests of majority and minorities, then illiberal democrats must choose to restore the 'living' people by resisting the deadly lure of universal togetherness.

How likely is this level of existential angst to play in the United States? It is tempting to say not much at all. As historically the 'country of immigration,' the genius of US liberal democracy has surely been to find balance and compromise among the competing claims of an ethno-culturally diverse national people.

Nevertheless, last month's National Conservatism Conference in Orlando, FL, saw many speakers present a similarly angst-ridden vision of liberal democrats turning to tyranny, wanting "to destroy us." Click Here

Is this any indication of a coming regime change in an increasingly illiberal US, obsessed with popular survival, or 'living,' over the 'togetherness' of majority with disparate minority groups? The jury is out.
