Embarrassingly, yours truly confesses to having been involved in creating at least one possible real reason.
Germans experienced a truly joyous moment with the removal of that Berlin Wall, bittersweet at the same time for the memory of the deaths of those shot crossing it.
But even the enormous discredit and opprobrium that the Wall and the shootings rightly brought down upon the leaders of East Germany, and by extension the Soviet leaders who supported it, cannot erase the earlier horrific memories of the monstrous amount of lives taken by a powerful marauding German war machine built up with heavy investment and cooperation from America's industrial and financial elite.
Today one billion of our brothers and sisters are walled in to experience hunger and malnutrition, many of whom will be shot while trying to feed themselves by ˜illegal' means.
Let's see to bringing down these capitalist built walls. Walls of colonialism and neo-colonialism that predate the ill conceived and ultimately inhuman attempt of a communist governed East Germany to cordon itself off.
In the name of this anniversary, condemn all the walls that still exist anywhere.
