                                   (She gets up to leave, Hamlet blocks
                                   her.)

                                   HAMLET
            Sit down. You're not going anywhere until we hold a mirror
            up to your heart.

                                   GERTRUDE
            What?! What are you going to do? Help!

                                   POLONIUS
                          (from behind tapestry)
            Help!

                                   HAMLET
            A rat!

                                   (Hamlet draws sword, thrusts into
                                   tapestry.)

                                   POLONIUS
            Oh--I am slain.

                                   (Beat.)

                                   GERTRUDE
            Hamlet--what have you done?!

                                   HAMLET
            Is it the king?

                                   (He tears tapestry away to reveal
                                   Polonius.)

                                   GERTRUDE
            Oh what a bloody deed!

                                   HAMLET
            Bloody indeed. Almost as bad as killing the king and
            marrying his brother.

                                   GERTRUDE
            Killing the king?

                                   HAMLET
                          (to Polonius)
            You intruding fool, you've paid the highest price for
            meddling too deep. Farewell.

                                   (He turns to Gertrude.)
