So had Lincoln not been shot, I'd quite possibly be working on that much more beautiful and happy project, MAPPING THE SACRED, which grew out of my vision of Wholeness (as expressed in 'Sharing My Vision of Wholeness: "Our Pathways Into Deep Meaning"' at http://www.nonesoblind.org/blog/?p=79) from which I felt summoned in the fall of 2004 to deal with the dark and ugly force I then saw holding our nation in its evil grip.
This notion highlights that other aspect of how history works, the one articulated in my "Concept of Evil" piece (see click here), and elsewhere: that much of the dynamic of history involves the operation of patterns that work to replicate themselves, and that work through cultures over the generations. So if a particular pattern gets strengthened at one time, its role in the world will likely be greater at some subsequent time, and vice versa if that pattern can be weakened, as might have happened had the nation's wounds been better bound up in the wake of that central national trauma of the Civil War.
This view of things also illuminates why it is that I regard the matter of Obama's leadership as being of such central importance. So many dark patterns operating in America in our times make it correspondingly urgent that the patterns of truth, love, peace, justice, etc., be represented by the strongest possible agents. And given how the forces of darkness have been gravitating in our time toward the precincts of power, and given the nature of the American political system, it is of utmost importance that the person in the Oval Office lead powerfully in the battle against darkness.
