On videos posted on YouTube, which show parts of a boycott action outside Wrigley Field against the Arizona Diamondbacks owner on Thursday, April 29th, there is nothing but fear and outrage that one might be actually paying for "illegals" to live in this country. Such resentment reinforces support for the law in Arizona.
User orlandoko, claims that Americans paid "363 billion dollars cause of illegals last year."
Another, XazulxWolfx, writes, "We are a country and we watch after our collective asses; not the entire f*cking planets. It's as if someone broke into your house to live there and when caught said " well i'd rather legally live in a house but i cant therefore me breaking in and tresspassing is entirely justified ". It's the most retarded logic i've ever heard. There is NO LAW stating that I have to be compasionate to my fellow man; and its immoral to say that i'm required to be."
Yet another, dogncatmom, suggests in the comments section of the same video, "[illegals] are choosing to lower the American wage by sneaking across our border and damaging our economy." This user adds, "The reason Democrats made people get social security numbers for babies (something that they did not need) was so that there would be a lot of available numbers in the system for illegals to use when they got job."
And, for people like user PatriotSue, the "illegals" are an affront to core American values:
"We have lost TENS OF THOUSANDS of U.S. CITIZENS, while our brave young soldiers have died on foreign soil. We have lost MORE U.S. CITIZENS at the hands of ILLEGAL HISPANIC ALIEN, than we have lost brave soldier in both wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan will soon be over, but the slaughter of our people, at the hands of ILLEGAL HISPANIC ALIENS will continue, until we remove EVERY SINGLE ILLEGAL ALIEN. ILLEGAL ALIEN COMMUNITIES protect those who kill us."
The wisdom being pushed is that those in this country helped make it the country it is today and others outside the country do not deserve a piece of the "prosperity" that has been won by Americans throughout history.
Such thinking is founded on myths (myths which a recent Washington Post article deconstructed): immigrants take jobs from American workers, immigration is at an all-time high and most immigrants came here illegally, today's immigrants are not integrating into American life like past waves did, cracking down on borders will make us safer, and immigration reform cannot happen in an election year.
It also comes from a fear that a group of Mexicans is taking over the country and radically remaking the ethnic or racial makeup of society. It is sometimes born out of white fear of a future America where white people are not a majority, where people of color set an agenda that promotes diversity and multiculturalism which might put different groups ahead of whites in this country.
