He took me to a barracks and as you can see from the photos its at best makeshift from whatever people brought themselves or was donated. The soldiers are from Donbass, Central Ukraine, and Kiev.
We went to the second furthest checkpoint going from Lugansk on the road to Kharkiv. A few minutes after getting there 2 buses pulled up and a possible problem. There were people on the bus that at first were not identifiable. There have been a lot of problems with Pravy Sektor terror squads in all the large cities in the region all summer planting bombs and snipers shooting people. It took about 10 minutes to clear it up and verify identifications.
Everyone there was Ukrainian- passports checked. We went to the furthest checkpoint from the city where the defense stops. This is the place where you want your most able guys just so they can survive. They had a small trailer there with a little propane heater that could sleep a few people at best.
The Front
We drove west for short while and stopped just before the crest of a hill. "Sergei77" sent a few of his guys ahead on foot and gave me his own helmet to put on. They told me to wait until the men called us over.
When we were at the crest of the hill the city sign pictured above was the most prominent thing on the landscape. Just before we got there they took me to the side and showed me an anti- artillery shelter they had here.
Sergei pointed to a small town about 5000 meters from us down the side of the hill. People still lived there, old and young, mothers and children. He said that as early as yesterday they were shelling the town. The army wasn't down there, Ukraine was shelling houses. I looked over and saw nothing except residential buildings. He started sounding a little frustrated and said the town gets hit regularly. The Ukrainian artillery position at the top of the next hill has clear line of sight over the town and our position. He doesn't know what will happen when Poroshenko attacks.
He asked if I wanted to see the Ukrainian artillery position and of course I did. We went over to the beginning of the down slope and he took out a pair of binoculars and handed them to me. He pointed to the peak of the next hill. Do you think they know we are here?- Of course they do.
I looked over and they could be clearly seen through the binoculars. I was looking at them- looking at me. They resumed shelling the next day.
