Foreseeing you'll convey a subject to others is a strong motive for thinking deeply about it, a motive we want students to experience. They'll form and master a field of knowledge by explaining it repeatedly piece by piece. To learn a subject, do what teachers do. Absorb, recall, explain; absorb, recall, explain.
A few principles describe the link between practice and mastered knowledge:
- All skills develop by well-directed practice across time.
- Knowledge is a skill developed by practice.
- The critical practice is explaining knowledge to someone else.
- Students are motivated most by skills they can demonstrate to a peer.
- Explaining mastered knowledge gives students great pleasure.
- With proper practice, all students can master an entire curriculum.
