It will get you a potential war with Iran. More useless tax cuts for the wealthy. Possibly another depression. A bigger deficit. It will put Americans against other Americans. People will be encouraged to have hatred and anger towards Hispanics and the LGBT community. You will get a presidency under siege. The stated number one Republican priority is to not help the American people. It isn't to get you better health care, better jobs, better schools and opportunities for your children. It's to destroy the president. Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell even said it in a recent interview. They want Obama to be a one-termer and they are willing to sacrifice the country along the way. They will spend millions and millions of your money to frivolously investigate and then attempt to impeach him if they can. These next few years will be regarded as a disaster. A dark spot in our proud history.
See I believe in America. I believe that we can accomplish anything. That we can be a positive force for good in the world. That we can have the best health care, the best education, the best opportunities for jobs and otherwise. I believe we can be good stewards of the earth, that we can make this country and the world a better place for each and every person who lives here. Yes we can. You remember that? It's not just a slogan, it's the truth.
But last night, the American people shot themselves in the foot. They voted for the Republican Party to gain seats in the Senate and to take over the House of Representatives. Your new Speaker of the House will be a man known for screaming: "Hell no we can't!" on the House floor in his opposition to the health care bill.
Hell no we can't.
Think about that for a second. Last night, that's what the American people said. And as a result, things will definitely get worse. Congress will be in gridlock when they should be coming up with viable solutions for real problems. We'll see absurd legislation and absurd investigations when we should be seeing something important like financial reform. And throughout all of this, more people will lose their homes. More kids will not be able to go to college. More people will become poor. Homeless. More people like my friend, Tom will die, alone and penniless in the dirt. It could be you. It could be somebody you know and love.
And you asked for it, America.
You said: "Hell no we can't".
