Eritrea's move toward China and Russia is causing concern in Washington. Djibouti, Eritrea's neighbor, has a US military base. But since 2017, China's set up camp too with enough room for their massive ships and subs. China's also been pouring money into Djibouti, putting the country in debt.

Then there's Somalia, to Eritrea's east, which despite tons of cash from the U.S., is still in a chaotic state. Its foreign minister recently flew to Moscow, possibly to discuss military ties and perhaps even to consider bringing in Russian mercenaries to help the country maintain stability.

Sudan, west of Eritrea, is going through a rough patch with a civil war disrupting years of U.S. support. Russia's presence there, together with Eritrea's budding friendship with Beijing could make things tough for Washington in the Horn of Africa.

With France being pushed out of Africa and the U.S. abandoning the continent, it is inevitable that with the end of Françafrique, a new era of Russian and Chinese influence in Africa begins.
