The political divide that brought the mob into existence is likely to continue, presenting the rest of America with decisions to make.
The majority of Americans who are not part of the lynch mob must decide whether to give in or fight. If they want to have the kind of future they voted for, their choice is obvious. But how can they defeat a lynch mob, especially one with the Justice Roberts Money behind it?
Start by giving the entire pantheon of right wing Americas in the lynch mob one all encompassing name: "Radical America". All those Americans who want a different future would also have an all encompassing name: "Moderate America". Campaign on this basis and ask Americans to throw in their lot with one or the other.
All of the differences between Radical America and Moderate America boil down to a choice between "saving the people" or "saving the money". For example: those who favor health care reform see the objective as helping those without proper health care while those who oppose the law see it as a costly entitlement program that will add to the budget deficit. Radical America would choose to save the money and keep taxes low and Moderate America would choose to save the people and make cuts in other programs like the military.
Radical America must also reconcile the contradiction between their choice to save the money and their religious beliefs. Is choosing not to help 40 million Americans without adequate health care consistent with the golden rule to do unto others as you would have them do unto you? Is this consistent with being your brother's keeper? "Charity begins at home" and "Personal responsibility" fall short when faced with the stark realty of a sick child whose mother has lost her job and with it her health insurance and cannot buy a private policy because of the child's pre-existing condition.
Moderate America will win this fight and the challenge contained in President Obama's inaugural speech will become a reality.
"America. In the face of our common dangers, in this winter of our hardship, let us remember these timeless words. With hope and virtue, let us brave once more the icy currents, and endure what storms may come. Let it be said by our children's children that when we were tested we refused to let this journey end, that we did not turn back nor did we falter; and with eyes fixed on the horizon and God's grace upon us, we carried forth that great gift of freedom and delivered it safely to future generations.
