Yes, the situation will soon be dire with Corporate Republicans in charge of all three branches of government and the majority of Governorships and statehouses. Great damage will surely be done.
Their control, however, will prove tenuous. Donald Trump's support will soon erode as his voters who sought radical change observe him handing power to the same old insider crowd.
And then, after much damage is done, the pendulum will swing back again -- but if we don't want it to swing back to the same old corporate Democrat crowd, progressives must organize. And we can. We have the knowledge, the numbers, and the wealth to transform the United States into a truly democratic force for justice and sustainability.
Our aim, as I've heard Wade Henderson of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights say many times, is "to work for an America as good as its ideals."
There is much that must be done and can be done. We can and must educate ourselves about the facts of our broken electoral system, the need and opportunity to transcend current political labels, and the viability of transforming the Democratic Party into an entity that works for authentic progressive transformation against the "monied incorporations" about which Jefferson warned.
We must to act locally -- and radically -- by getting to know our neighbors and figuring out how to work with them and build power. We do not need to wait for the national organizations to lead us, but we can and should urge them to follow.
