Now Senators Obama and Biden, as well as Governor Palen and Senator McCain, stump the entire country, and the conflagration heats up more each day as we approach November fourth. We'd do well also to remember what Lady Liberty says upon her inscription:
"Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed, to me:
I lift my lamp beside the golden door."
Little has changed since this gift from France was erected in the harbor of New York City. Too many Americans have yet to realize the American Dream. As a nation of immigrants, everyone is seeking that "golden door." And too few have found it. Even now the very wealthy stand nearly untouched by financial crisis, while the middle class shrinks, with homes in foreclosure, and unpaid bills.
Jobs must soon be created. Barack offers the solution of these being grown within our economy, energy, and ecosystem, in fields that lend themselves to solving the crises associated with them. Nothing could be more welcome than that. Drastic times call for drastic measures. When FDR faced a similar impasse he set up the WPA. Now we have need of projects which will, like that program, educate and offer new skills to American workers.
Our country fears the future greatly, and with good reason. Franklin D. Roosevelt said "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself!" So, it's chin up, Americans. Hopefully better times are to come without overly draconian actions being taken. The bail out of Wall Street seems to be only a primary step. Now more tax incentives are being called for by Democrats to benefit the poor, middle class and elderly.
George Bush - lame duck that he is - seems to be of little further assistance. He's not only walking, talking and quacking like a duck, but limping like an injured one. In truth in his time he's spent all his influence, to little avail The dead and national deficit evidence his irresponsibility in blood and money.
So where do we go from here?
Unfortunately, nobody has a complete answer, but Obama is offering many, and McCain few. Now is no time to "wait and see!" Will your mortgage payment wait or your utility bills? Americans are poised upon a point delicately, but perhaps they can come together with the realization that we have more in common than that which would separate us.
The alternative is a national "house divided against itself," which, as said Abraham Lincoln, "cannot stand!" Common purpose must infuse us. No more can there be a license to freely spend, to wage war without regard to expense.
Concentration is demanded upon every issue, and in every problem locale upon this globe of ours. Afghanistan, Pakistan, Israel, Palestine, Russia and neighboring Georgia, Darfur, North Korea: All call out for our attention and cannot be ignored.
All about us lays a world in torment and fraught with anxiety. Who but the United States has the wherewithal to tend to these problems? Yet, as Barack has said so many times, we cannot do all of this alone. We must reinvigorate our alliances all over this planet, and restore for ourselves the confidence of the world.
Let us enjoin Barack Obama and Joe Biden to help us in that task. Whatever promise is made must be kept. We can be lifted aloft once again, even if it be only on a wink and a sincere prayer!
