Why are progressive Democrats backing an anti-BDS bill that was introduced at an AIPAC conference?

House Democrats, including 9 of the 11 Vice Chairs of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, are backing an anti-BDS bill that they think is constitutional but it’s destined to backfire on them.

The fact-sheet also mentions that the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) supports the resolution, but it doesn’t point out that it was actually introduced at an AIPAC conference in March as part of its lobbying agenda

Also see how this resolution is a Trojan Horse for future punitive state and federal legislation; and labeling anybody who supports BDS as anti-Semitic:

Lara Friedman, Foundation for Middle East Peace.

Also see, The Nation, Phyllis Bennis:

H.Res. 246 is essentially a statement of principles by the House in this case, a statement demonizing BDS as unacceptable and implying that it's anti-Semitic. It is filled with misrepresentations and specific lies about what BDS is and isn't.

As of this week given the FBI statement, the US is no longer a free country. It is a tyrranical, totalitarian oligarchy. If all that we do is complain daily at that day's violation of the US constitution nothing will change. The sad fact is that most of the country is living with a hopeless level of debt. And they are too frightened to even think about the issue of liberty. I don't disagree with your assessment. I just think we have no tools to change this depraved system.

I do follow him. If you go to consortium news and listen to the last 20 minutes of Friday's video broadcast he is interviewed there specifically about that article.

This is one of two House votes that confuse my opinion of Tulsi Gabbard. (The other was for the budget that gave the military another record handout.)

On the one hand, Tulsi and a few others put forth a bill that basically confirms the right to boycott, as already granted by the 1st Amendment. But, on the other hand, she voted FOR the anti-BDS bill.

She said that this bill doesn't make BDS acts illegal, yet it's quite clear it lays a pretty good foundation for just that. So, I'm not sure where her head is there.

One of the biggest questions I have in all of this is, after deciding to sit out of some other bills, why she chose to make this vote at all.

The Israel lobby is hard to fight. I like Gabbard for her stands against regime change wars, she is well spoken, and intelligent, but like BS she has some warts. Compared to most politicians they have leprosy. Regardless, I will not support any Democrat, but I welcome any anti-war support we can get.

I suppose people have to accept (for now) that no one candidate is going to get all the issues right anyway. As I keep saying during these times, I'm just glad I'm not American.

This isn't say Canada doesn't have a significant number of similar issues attached to it. :(

I posted this not long ago, but I encourage readers who have not seen this particular video to watch this 13 minute piece from The Real News Network click here

Don't quite know what to make of it, except to note there seems to be much more to this than meets the eye. My sense is that it could well turn against the Zionists, but as always, make up your own mind, listen to your gut; at this stage, my opinion presently is that I don't think anyone can conclude too much from it.

I add this from a bright OEN reader/poster in re TG:

As we know there is nothing passed through Congress without a lot of sausage making to gain enough votes to pass. I usually refer to sausage making as by hook or crook. Tulsi could not turn down the VA package that was included without the veteran's benefits, medical and otherwise but for more war money. There is no doubt that was the only reason it was allowed to be attached to the bill.

You have to recognize the progressive votes in favor of H.Res.246 in the context of Marco Rubio's S.1, which is a whole lot worse but which has been "held at the table" in the House since early February. S.1 is actual legislation, while H.Res.246 is just a "sense of the House" resolution with nothing enforcible in it.

I strongly suspect that some kind of deal was made in the Democratic caucus that the progressives would support H.Res.246 in return for the continued tabling of S.1 -- giving the anti-BDS Democrats the satisfaction of passing an innocuous "sense of the House" resolution condemning BDS as an alternative to anti-BDS Democrats joining with Republicans to pass the genuinely dangerous S.1. And note that H.Res.246 does expressly recognize the First Amendment rights of BDS advocates.

Tulsi's getting singled out here, but other progressives like Bernie's co-chair Ro Khanna also voted for H.Res.246, which strengthens my belief that there was some kind of a deal made here but one that's not going to be acknowledged publicly. Sometimes these deals just have to be made, passing a somewhat objectionable resolution as an alternative to some real stinker of a law.
