Colin Kaepernick is refusing to stand for the national anthem to protest the frequent deaths of black people like Freddie Gray, Tamir Rice, Eric Garner, Alton Sterling, Philando Castile, Sandra Bland, and countless others, at the hands of law enforcement, and to protest the Justice system for not meaningfully punishing officers when it happens. Kaepernick is arguing that police will abuse their power against a black man, immediately reverting to force and threats to keep him down. And the Santa Clara police union is proving Kaepernick’s point by essentially saying he better shut up about that, "or else." Both the 49ers and the NFL have said that players are encouraged, but not required to stand for the national anthem, and that they respect players’ First Amendment rights.
