A famous astrophysicist (and guitar player) tells all about an ambitious mission to save humanity from asteroids, should one ever threaten Earth.

Brian May — lead guitarist and a songwriter with the band Queen — recently discussed the European Space Agency mission Hera in a new video. Hera — along with a NASA mission called the Double Asteroid Redirect Test (DART), will both visit an a double asteroid called Didymos.

'Imagine a mountain in the sky, with another rock about the size of the Great Pyramid swinging around it,' May said in the video. 'That's Didymos. Just the seemingly tiny world is big enough to destroy a city.'

I know, I know, here on Op Ed we're all obsessed with the melodrama in Washington; but to me that's all a dick-waving game of egos, and I know we're star folk at heart.

I get very little support for this attitude, but once it hit me, I couldn't put it down, and it's been at least twenty five years of trying to convince people that if we hadn't been such dicks, all of us, we'd be at odds to deal with the fact that the only enemy we ever really had is up there wandering around waiting to be recognized.

Seems the Mayans were familiar with the concept, and I believe much of the obtuse Christian dogma, a blend of health tips and astronomy, were simply lost in time and translation, and angry returning Gods were at the top of their list too, all framed in poetry for the clueless masses.

This is our gift to the planet. Never mind our sloppy ways, we're barely out of the jungle relative to our total history, and we're making great strides you have to admit. Some of us are stuck back there though, and it will be a while before we all catch on.

So be of good cheer. We're actually the saviors here.

Be sure to tell the children.
