James Alex Fields, Jr., accused of 2nd degree murder in Charlottesville had texted his mother, Samantha Bloom, Friday to say he had dropped his cat off at her home on his way to an “alt-right” rally in VA. When the Blade interviewed her by video, she hadn't yet heard details about the incident nor had she been contacted by authorities. She seemed to get her first information from the crew interviewing her. She said she did not talk with her son much about politics, although he told her he was going to the rally. She was unclear about the meaning of the term "alt-right," and was surprised when it was explained as being related to white supremacy. When she asked the interviewers whether the authorities were looking for her son, they told her that their information indicated that he was already in custody. Clearly shaken, she ended the interview.
