Finland is winning the war on fake news. What it's learned may be crucial to Western democracy

At Espoo Adult Education Centre, Jussi Toivanen's PowerPoint slide “Have you been hit by the Russian troll army?” included methods to deceive: image and video manipulations, half-truths, intimidation and false profiles, and how to identify bots: look for stock photos, assess the volume of posts per day, check for inconsistent translations and no personal information, ending with “deepfake” — highly realistic manipulated video or audio — of Barack Obama to highlight challenges in the information war ahead. The course is part of an anti-fake news initiative launched by Finland’s government in 2014, two years before Russia meddled in the US elections.

Your point is well taken; however, that doesn't invalidate any of the merit or points in the article, which is about Finland, not CNN. Any handle on how to limit the effects of the Russian Troll Factory's work are vital and incisive.

So, after everything that has transpired in the last while, people still believe there's some huge "Russian meddling" operation working to subvert all world politics. These same people probably still believe the U.S. doesn't do just that, and on a much more serious scale.

Now, these people are in their children's classrooms, using "Russian troll factories" as the running example to "educate" on the subject of "fake news". (Of course, they could've used "Chinese troll factories" or "American troll factories", but "Russian" is the "industry standard" in all reference to "identifying fake news", now isn't it?!)

The linked piece is typical of CNN, complete with false facts, such as the "annexation of Crimea by Moscow" and the unsubstantiated claim of "Kremlin-backed propaganda campaigns" in Finland.

Even CNN says that Finland is the most resistant to fake news (and displays this fact with a convenient bar graph), yet for some reason, some people have deemed it necessary to start "educating" their students about how fake news is recognized?!

You needn't go as far as Russia to find propaganda. Sure, you'll find some there, no doubt. But there's so much more going on in America, you're all walking in it.

"Russian troll factories" is a FAKE NEWS PREMISE.

No, it is not a Fake News Premise, not at all.

Throughout 2016, I personally had to delete thousands of extremely obvious fake news items posted in my Facebook group, Bernie Sanders Advice and Strategies to Win in 2020, and they were all either Russian, Serbian, or Macedonian. I always wondered while deleting them how any American with half a brain could possibly be influenced by such archetypal journalistic garbage.

It was a real pain in the ass, almost as bad as Robo calls.

Those deletions was taking too much time, so I removed ALL of the people posting them, and the problem instantly stopped!

You can argue with CNN or large scale semantic paradigms all you wish; I am speaking from direct extensive personal experience.

I posted long before anyone else that there must be some kind of troll factory to crank out all of this utter obvious trash, except I was wrong, because I pinned it on some hypothetical GRU basement in Moscow, when in fact it is a 4 story building in St. Petersburg, where Putin served as a Mayor long ago.

I do agree with you that the US engages in equally awful manipulations in elections all over the world, and has for decades, if not for the entire past century.

Even worse things than election meddling: what was the Spanish American War stemming from a false flag incident in Havana Bay with the flames fanned by William Randolph Hearst?

You must also realize that all such "troll farms", all over the world, do the bidding of whoever is paying them. It would also be interesting to know how you confirmed the origin of these troll entries. (How did you know you were deleting something that came from Russia, Serbia or Macedonia, specifically?)

You could have a Chinese, Indian or even an American troll farm delivering the same stuff. These people don't care about what they're putting out, or to whom, and don't care where their money comes from. And, the metadata attached to this stuff is usually obfuscated, in order to confuse its origins.

Yes, it's annoying, and it causes people to say, "something should be done about it!" Unfortunately, the very people who want to control narratives use this kind of thing, and the outrage it produces, to "take charge" of the scene, using "fake news" as the excuse to censor everyone else.

"Russian troll factories" is manufactured bait for the "fake news" hook. It's based loosely on a real thing that has little significance in reality, and pumped up into something much bigger and sinister, so everyone will accept a "war on fake news", where everyone is subject to being "the enemy".

Disbelieve all you wish. Doesn't matter a whit to me. My knowledge is personal and very factual, and preceded all discussions in the media of troll farms.

The obvious point is that there are no Chinese or Indian Troll farms.

As to determining origins of posters, that is quite easy on Facebook to look at their profile which states the nation of origin, which you would know but you parted paths with Facebook, or did you ever have a profile on Facebook?

"The obvious point is that there are no Chinese or Indian Troll farms."

Seriously?! Do you really think places like Calcutta and Taipei are only housing global telephone scams? (You did at least know they were doing that, right?)

"...that is quite easy on Facebook to look at their profile which states the nation of origin..."

Sorry, but no! You can create a profile designed to appear from any location, simply by using any VPN. And there's other methodologies that can be used to confuse things even more.

"...you parted paths with Facebook, or did you ever have a profile on Facebook?"

You're assuming too much. I've had a profile on Facebook since it began. Yes, I'm actively encouraging people to look to the newer forms of social media, etc., but that doesn't mean simply dropping my account "cold". I've kept the account, and locked it down from my end, in order to stay connected, and witness and log all the crap they're doing at their end.

How do you think I would hope to qualify anything I say on the subject, if I'm not "in there" and "watching"?!

I just don't use the account for any "important" or "sensitive" social media stuff. For that, I use more secure, private means, as I've been recommending everyone else do.

Again, you have entirely missed the point which is that in Finland in these matters they are not dealing with Troll Factories in China or India.

You stated that Russian Troll Factories were Fake News Creations. I showed that you were wrong because I have had extensive personal experience.

If you think for a moment the hundreds of profiles (listing Russia, or Serbia, or Ukraine, or Macedonia as the home of the poster) were themselves fake or bogus profiles, then tally ho! you can wallow off into a bog of paranoiac counter intelligence nonsense.

I know that the fake news in my own Facebook stopped when I removed all of them.,

The rest of what you say is completely intransigent and irrelevant to my Quicklink, and any comments I might make would only confuse you, so I will end further dialogue with you except to encourage you after 2966 comments to write your first article here at OpEdNews.

I correct myself, as I've looked closer at your comments, starting with the first: Any handle on how to limit the effects of the Russian Troll Factory's work are vital and incisive.

You start with a premise that has been debunked a thousand ways to Sunday. The burden is on YOU to explain wtf you mean by the Russian Troll Factory.

I start with a simple question: Were you influenced by this? If so, how?

Answer appreciated in advance, and recommended in advance for a headline article.

Are you well educated in this topic too?

Apparently, he's too "experienced" to lower himself to these challenges. Like Facebook, he decided to delete my last reply to him. (I expect this entry will disappear as well.)

Every time someone gets into this subject with him, he just gets "creatively nasty".

Only editors delete comments, after someone flags them, and then they are reluctant to delete them.

I personally like to leave such things up, because they form a permanent record of how blatantly illogical some frequent commenters are so often, with so little substance of their own to make their own article, or perhaps it is a matter of a fundamental lack of courage for those who prefer pseudonyms to not have to deal with too much reality.

I truly don't know. I am an art dealer and a gonzo journalist, writing at will about what I consider both truthful and significant, but not a psychiatrist.

I made it clear that my own experience on Facebook with Fake News posted by Russian Trolls and their sycophants/allies in Ukraine, Serbia, and Macedonia, in my own Facebook group, Bernie Sanders Advice and Strategies to Win, was extensive. The Fake News posts only came to an end when I removed and blocked all of them from being in the group.

Ipso facto.

I am not writing yet another article about this, and absolutely not about to rehash my correspondence to ALL of the members of the Facebook Board of Directors on several occasions, just about 3 years ago.

Maybe readers would find this video more credible, from a former employee at the Internet Research Agency, a Russian entity charged with meddling in the 2016 US elections?

As you wish. I really don't care. If you dispute that Russian Troll Factory is real, even after see photos and videos of the building and seeing commentaries from two people who worked there, so be it.

I too was partially brought up on my grandfather's farm and as such, learned to recognize the value of truth.

Again, speaking from personal experience, I rooted out the folks planting fake news in my own Facebook group and the fake news stopped, in toto. If you want to dismiss that as bullshit, be my guest.

I can assure you that Mark Zuckerberg and his board of directors came to recognize the truth of such things as fake Russian news items on Facebook, but only after hearing it from US Senators hammering them with questions in a hearing.

The worse manipulation of the American election processes were not committed by Russian Trolls putting forth fake news; it was from Republicans manipulating voting machines. Why don't you take 80 minutes and watch this film:
