'Triage by Age' on the Heels of 'Pre-pregnancy'

Recently, two bio-ethicists at NIH concluded the government should make the choice of who lives or dies based on age. Meanwhile over at the CDC the government is issuing guidelines for women's health, most specifically the pre-pregnant years. Two studies advocating a woman's fertile, child-bearing years as a basis for treatment options and availability, and health care provider decision-making. Is this more Bush "fake science" to let the Frist's of the world control a woman's body and medical choices? I admit I was disturbed by a May 16th WaPo article, Forever Pregnant subtitled "Treat Nearly All Women as Pre-Pregnant." Today I was just pissed off when I read that some bio-ethicists want the government to embrace ' triage by age' declaring who should and should not get the flu vaccine first during the next pandemic..."the 60-year-old grandmother with a weak heart and lungs or the healthy 4-year-old with decades ahead of her?" What about the 60-year-old grandfather...? The collective message from both articles is that as an over 50, long past menses into menopause woman, I am somewhere at the bottom of the health care 'food chain' and it should be up to the government to decide.
New federal guidelines ask all females capable of conceiving a baby to treat themselves -- and to be treated by the health care system -- as pre-pregnant, regardless of whether they plan to get pregnant anytime soon. Among other things, this means all women between first menstrual period and menopause should take folic acid supplements, refrain from smoking, maintain a healthy weight and keep chronic conditions such as asthma and diabetes under control...The recommendations aim to "increase public awareness of the importance of preconception health" and emphasize the "importance of managing risk factors prior to pregnancy... The recommendations aim to "increase public awareness of the importance of preconception health" and emphasize the "importance of managing risk factors prior to pregnancy...
Good advice! What about the preconception health of men? There are some fat bastards out there! What guidelines were issued for them and their reproductive health other than a product called Viagra? Does the government assume that all congential abnormalities are causually related to the behaviors of the female? A smoking, boozing, under-nourished, over-weight wheezing man's sperm is not conceivably a reproductive disaster in the making? Maybe we are not hearing anything about guidelines for men is that my apt description fits half of Congress and almost all those GOP Religious Right Wing Fundamentalist Wingnuts. Maybe it's time for women to issue some 'reproductive' guidelines of their own if you know what I mean... To add insult to injury, the government has itself a new pyramid - triage by age - and I'm not even on it because I'm over 50!!! Piece by piece, they are ceating "acceptable" medical classifications for women that will be used to determine a variety of services the government should or should not allow them access. And if you are not in the 'pre-pregnant' classification, you don't squat.
Two male bio-ethicists at the National Institutes of Health published an article in Science declaring who should and should not get the flu vaccine first during the next pandemic. As the Boston Globe writer phrased it, should it be "the 60-year-old grandmother with a weak heart and lungs or the healthy 4-year-old with decades ahead of her?" The Globe writer got the gist of the doctors' move, pitting life against life by age, but personifying that contrast with two females was her decision. When it comes to triage by age, Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel and Dr. Alan Wertheimer think the government should opt first for 13 to 40-year-olds [onset of menses], then 7 to 12-year-olds, then 41 to 50-year-olds. Presumably those over 50 are out of luck.
All this sounds like more silly BushCo. 'fake science' bullshit dreamed up and endorsed by the GOP Religious Right Fundamentalists Wingnuts who have the Republican Party by the balls...[and how healthy can that be?] to get total control over a woman's reproductive behavior, medical options, and life-cycle. Next thing you know, Bush will be hailing the new Cabinet-level position, THE OFFICE OF UTERINE CONTROL. There will be no Senate confirmation because god doesn't want. He say so. He spoke into a Bush again... SOURCES: Forever Pregnant Alarmist Demography Stalks Women Over 60
