This Year's DNC: What's Missing?

Certainly the conventional hoopdeedah, patriotic balloons, loud music and raucous cheering are missing, and with them the manic gusto we out here in tv land usually enjoy.

In addition, I had a sick feeling that Trump was probably watching, and that crossed into my concentration now and then specifically, what he must have been thinking and mumbling. Not fun.

It is a sober, virtual convention but with lots to celebrate: The emphasis is on youth, racial diversity, and the large number of women added to our roster of representation, local and national. which is great.

But first of all, I kind of miss appearances by old goldies like Barbra Streisand, whom youth love too. We had Meryl Streep in 2016.

All the celebs glowed with unfurrowed brows--the nonpoliticians anyway.

But what hurts me much more is this:

A presidential candidate who wins fully one-third of the votes cast at a party's convention is a force to be reckoned with, not ignored: first to be aired, soon to be dismissed, his nominations brief though AOC stole all four days for some of us.

And progressives know that Bernie's elimination in the 2016 and 2020 primaries smacked of untoward manipulation, GOP tactics that shame the blue party.

When the Vermont delegation announced its distribution of candidate votes, Bernie and Jane Sanders stood stage right in the rustic setting, unsmiling, totally ignored by MSNBC's commentators. I don't know how other tv stations behaved, but my heart broke. Bernie did receive the most votes from his home state, 11, but so what? At least voters chose their native son, but Biden collected five votes and uncommitted netted eight: 13 vs. 11.

I think that one time slot should have been reserved for all the Republican celebrity supporters, speaking in succession.

This is a short observation on a huge subject.

Yes, truly 'what was missing' at the DNC 2020 Convention was the 'youth & vigor' of 'bygone days' - 'step forward' Obama, 48, 6.1 ft tall, 'slim and fit', who 'captured the nation' with his 'promise' of 'real change you can believe in', winning his two terms in office in 'landslide victories', without getting 'impeached' by the majority Republican congress he had for six years of his Presidency. Here in 2020 we have two possibly-outdated established 'career politicians', Biden, 77, 6 ft tall, and Sanders, 78, 6 ft tall - highly doubtful that the American People, the 99% 'struggling to get by' in the second decade of the 21st Century, are going to be much enthralled by an 81 year old Biden, or an 82 year old Sanders, seeking a second term in office in 2024? or the 77 year old Biden 'promising' to change everything 'after taking office' in 2021 - 'on day one', he says. Hardly a doubt, that 'income and wealth inequality', with Biden elected or Trump reelected, will continue to 'remain 'in the hands of a few'. Yes, Bush remains securely 'above the law' in 'a nation of laws', and yes, no mention whatsoever about Building 7 on 9/11 - remember only 'the nineteen hijackers', who have America pausing for a moment on every anniversary of 9/11, after nearly nineteen years later, to remember 'the dastardly deed' (except 'that explosives' had been used to destroy the 3 towers on 9/11),

Thanks for your comment!

as a progressive friend just wrote me, You don't get the army you want but the one you have (quoting Rumsfeld).

I'm praying for the one we don't have that may prolong this country's existence for a few more years. Warts and all. Lesser of two evils

Yes, Trump had been 'the lesser of two evils' back in 2016. No, Biden surely is not 'the lesser of two evils' in 2020 - he's 'a career politician' who 'cannot be trusted' under any circumstances whatsoever. Biden, a 'poor choice' coming from the DNC. Biden still defends his Iraq War vote, won't admit a mistake, or call for bringing Bush to justice under our laws and treaties, even claiming, after knowing Bush had lied a lot about Saddam's WMD, that was the 'right thing to do', to get rid of Saddam, so for Biden, yes, 'regime change' wars and 'preemptive wars' were OK with him, if it pleased Bush, then he's for it, then/and now. No, it's not Biden, not now, not ever. No, not the 'career politician' Sanders - he's been asking 'we must' for decades 'to no avail'. The 'income and wealth' of the nation continue 'to trickle up to the top', and millions of Americans are without 'medicare for all' health insurance, even 'after he takes office', even after the Democrats had super majorities in congress but never adjusted the tax rates for the wealthy back up to 72%, where they were before Reagan 'took office'.

Thank you for this knowledgeable rant and I empathize fully. Tell me your plan b. I would never vote for Trump. I'd fight once Biden wins. If revolution is the only ultimate solution, good luck succeeding at it!

Thank You Marta - yes, if history 'plays a part', Americans have 'rallied around the president' in 'times of crisis, wars, and upheavals'. Biden, a career politician, 79 year old, 6 feet tall, would be a 'dangerous' president, in my opinion, having voted for the 'fabricated' Iraq War, and 'still defending his vote' today, and having admitted he 'would shut down the economy', which is our 'lifeblood', of course, in 'response' to a virus. Trump, a former Real Estate Developer and Founder of The Trump Organization, 74 year old, 6 feet 3 inches tall, is certainly not 'a career politician', but had announced his bid for a second term even before being sworn in for his first term. Yes, our presidents are being 'tested' in office - at this time of great crisis for the United States, with a COVID-19 corona virus ravaging the nation and killing Americans, and an economic meltdown of unprecedented proportions, with tens of millions of Americans unemployed, and millions of jobs lost, and a National Debt 'in the trillions', Trump appears to be quite ready to get started on a second term - if the American People 'rally around' their president. If not, they would be changing 'boats in midstream' of course - not recommended at all in the 'raging waters' to try 'something new', untested, and 'dangerous', 'to be sure'. Plan B - 'say a prayer' - hope 'for the best'.
