Over the past week we've had a number of different glitches happen that were frustrating. - The site was running very slow. That can cause error messages that the MYSQL database is not available. We think we have that resolved.
- We tried a way to speed up loading of the front page, but because of the slowness of the site, it ended up not working, and there were columns that had content that couldn't be clicked. After days of working on that project, we put it on hold.
- We had problems with CommonsSearch, our image search tool. Flickr changed its API's way of handling search inquiries, and that affected our selection and cropping functions. We spent a few days wrestling with that one, but it is working again. Not having the tool made me realize how much I value it and take it for granted.
- There were other issues with error messages when submitting articles, with error messages. We got those fixed too.
Dealing with all these problems can be pretty demanding and stressful at our end. It's part of the job.
Whenever you have any issue with the site we'd really appreciate it if you can let us know. Include a copy of the error message and a detailed description of the steps you took to get there. Just drop me an email rob at opednews dot com. And last but not least, kudos to our webmaster for doing a fantastic job of sorting out the issues we had to deal with.
