Just Around the Corner

On the one hand, we have the prospect of Barack Obama being re-elected. For many of us, just the idea of his continuing the course he has taken this country on thus far is chilling enough. But, the fact is that in a second Obama Administration, with the President no longer having to face the electorate again, I believe he will shed whatever veneer of populism he has displayed during his first term, and we will bear witness to an extravaganza of far-right "governance" which will probably make us downright nostalgic for George W. Bush. Without having to face re-election ever again, Obama will have no motivation whatsoever to appease his progressive base, so I believe we'll see his true colors in all their glory....

On the other hand, should Mitt Romney (or an Republican) prevail, we'll just have 4-8 years of his (their) unabashed servitude to the 1%, without any real pretense to the contrary.

The only problem with these two scenarios is that this country can't endure much more of the status quo, economically, militarily, or otherwise. So, not long into 2013, I believe we'll start to see the complete unraveling of this once great nation, and perhaps the world.

As Bill Moyers recently said before declaring our system to be "totally corrupt", I too get no pleasure in stating the above.

So, 2012 may prove the Mayans right, yet....
