In 2008, we in the progressive movement talked about change. But the time for talk is over. In 2009, it's up to us to make change happen.
With the economy teetering towards another Great Depression, our first task for the year is clear: swiftly pass an economic recovery plan that's big and bold, that's strategic, substantial and sustained.
Today, President-Elect Barack Obama has proposed just that: an American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan, based on the same principles as our own $900 billion, two-year Main Street Recovery Program.
Tell Congress: We need jobs NOW! Pass the American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan IMMEDIATELY!
The anti-government conservatism of the Bush era produced only speculative bubbles that have now exploded, devastating what's left of America’s productive private sector. Obama's smart plan for preventing a prolonged recession in the short-term is also designed to increase investment in America's foundation to ensure prosperity in the long-term: creating jobs, generating clean energy, modernizing infrastructure and expanding access to health care and education.
But conservative forces of obstruction persist. They want to delay passage to minimize the plan's ability to impact the economy in time. They want to pressure Obama and congressional leaders to weaken the bill with less investment and more wasteful corporate tax breaks.
If we want change, we cannot let conservative sabotage go unanswered.
Tell Congress: We need jobs NOW! Pass the American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan IMMEDIATELY!
The progressive grassroots must speak up and stand tall. We must make sure the economic recovery plan remains big and bold, retains substantial public investment, creates jobs now, and puts us back on the path to long-term prosperity.
Every day on OurFuture.org, Campaign for America's Future will be leading the fight, putting the spotlight on the economic urgency and debunking conservative misinformation. And we'll stay in touch by email so we in the grassroots will have all the tools we need to win this critical battle.
Because we cannot do this alone. The new President cannot do this alone. We must engage with all our grassroots might.
And our first step is making sure Congress hears our voice loud and clear.
Tell Congress: We need jobs NOW! Pass the American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan IMMEDIATELY!
Last year, we organized, we coordinated, we sweated and we stunned the world. Now we must put the same effort into turning change from a slogan to reality.
You know what we can do. Now let's do it.
