Today, Elliot Spitzer got himself busted. Apparently, the FBI ran phone taps that proved he hired a hooker in DC.

Right wing legislators who already hated his guts are sanctimoniously calling for his resignation. The mainstream media are saying he was tied to a prostitution ring. It looks to me like he was a customer. That's all.

Last week, we got the news that one out of 100 Americans are in jail. Part of the reason for this is the fact that we have a bunch of laws on the books that punish people for victimless crimes. Prostitution and the use of a prostitute's services are examples, as are the use of "illegal" Drugs.

There is certainly hypocrisy here, since Spitzer busted several prostitution rings when he was state Attorney General.

Then, we have David Vitter, the Louisiana legislator who was outed for having frequented prostitutes. He got a pass.

There's no excuse for Spitzer's behavior. He betrayed his wife and family and demonstrated hypocrisy. I feel sorry for Spitzer's wife and family. But this kind of victimless crime just does not justify resignationi, let alone imprisonment. It is not surprising that he is getting the scandal treatment. That's the way the media operate nowadays.

Already, the Clinton campaign has scrubbed him from their website.

The losers may be the Democrats in the state of New York, where the state house was close to being taken over, for the first time in decades, by Democrats. Maybe a New York Democrat with experience with lust causing political problems, a guy whose middle name is pecadillo, could help Spitzer. After all, Bill has an office in Harlem.

Of course, the media will be making a big deal about this for a few days, at least, since Spitzer apparently screwed a prostitute. That's a big deal for them much bigger than the job Dick Cheney did screwing America.

Then there's Wall Street, where Spitzer built his reputation as a guy who was tough on corporate abuses. The perpetrators he came down on are celebrating now.  You know, it wouldn't be the first time that a corrupt party used vice and the lure of sex to take one of the good guys down. Unfortunately, otherwise good people do succumb to seduction. Great men and women are rarely perfect.

Pathetic, isn't it?

Oh by the way. Any word whether the phone taps were court authorized? Were they started as part of the telecom program that a lot of sellout dems are willing to pardon the telecoms for? Just some thoughts.

Personally, as long as Spitzer didn't use government funds, I think he should keep his job. Actually, I think prostitution and a lot of now illegal drugs should be made legal. We have too many people in prison thanks to religious extremism.
