Ellen DeGeneres' Misuse Of The Media and A Challenge To Right That Wrong

For the past two days I've been immersed in conversations with several principals in the Ellen DeGeneres-Mutts & Moms-Iggy the Pup fiasco.  And fiasco it is.  I've spoken with Ellen's publicist, Ellen's dog trainer, the Vice President of Publicity for Telepictures (which produces Ellen's show),  the attorney for Marina Baktis and Vanessa Chekroun (owners of Mutts & Moms in Pasadena, CA), and several respected animal rescue experts in the Los Angeles area - many who have worked with Mutts & Moms.

For readers who are unaware of the Ellen DeGeneres/Mutts & Moms fiasco, here is a video synopsis:

This past Monday, on her popular daytime talk show, Ellen DeGeneres dissolved into tears as she recounted her experience of adopting a puppy (Iggy) from a pet adoption agency (Mutts & Moms in Pasadena, CA - which to her credit, DeGeneres didn't name).   After two weeks, Ellen and her partner, Portia de Rossi, decided Iggy was incompatible with their household and gave Iggy to Ellen's hairdresser (Cheryl Marks) and the hairdresser's eleven and twelve year old daughters.  But the legal contract Ellen signed with Mutts & Moms forbade Ellen from giving Iggy away, and required Iggy to be returned to the Agency should Ellen decide not to keep him.  By giving 7 lb. Iggy to her hairdresser and not returning him to Mutts & Moms as stipulated, Ellen broke her contract.  As a result, Mutts & Moms went to the hairdresser's home, where, in the presence of the police, they confiscated Iggy, returned him to their agency, and found him another home.

Germane to this synopsis is the resultant vitriol that drove the HUMANS involved to such an impasse that rational negotiation on Iggy's behalf became impossible.  Mutts & Moms failed to give the hairdresser's family its fullest consideration as legitimate adopters, and used its legal leverage to remove Iggy from a home where he was wanted.  DeGeneres used the full extent of her celebrity to ignite a fan-based frenzy that resulted in death threats to the impoverished owners of Mutts & Moms.  In addition, Baktis and Chekroun have likely lost their animal rescue business and small store.  An online petition to Free Iggy has been launched by Ellen's supporters:
(http://www.petitiononline.com/mod_perl/signed.cgi?FreeIggy), while an earlier online petition, which asked petitioners not to adopt from animal rescue organizations until Iggy is returned, has rightfully been taken down.

Still the saddest repercussion of all is the potential for tens of thousands of dogs and cats to go unadopted, and to be euthanized, due to the anger engendered toward rescue groups as a result of this debacle.

Below are are few clarifications of inaccuracies reported by the media on this story:

1.  Iggy did not live with DeGeneres and De Rossi for the full two weeks before he was given to hairdresser Cheryl Marks.  Iggy was left in the care of Los Angeles dog trainer, Zach Grey (UrbanTails.net), who reunited Iggy with DeGeneres and De Rossi after 9 days of individual and group training - at which time Degeneres and De Rossi concluded that they didn't want a young puppy - UNDERSCORING THE NEED FOR THE CONTRACTUAL REQUIREMENT TO RETURN ANIMALS TO THEIR AGENCIES IF THE ANIMAL IS UNWANTED.  The fact is, DeGeneres and De Rossi did what thousands of adopters do.   They wanted a puppy, but realizing the amount of work a puppy takes, they couldn't make that commitment.  Can one honestly fault Mutts & Moms for enforcing a provision that protects rejected animals?   If Mutts & Moms were to PUBLICLY disregard this requirement, it would pave the way for anyone to overrule this safeguard and recklessly dispose of an animal.

2.  Contrary to the negativity generated toward Mutts & Moms by the powerful DeGeneres camp and biased media pundits, the animal rescue experts with whom I've spoken were complimentary toward the organization.  Ricky Whitman, Vice President of Community Resources for the Pasadena Humane Society (PHS), told me she was not clearly represented in the press when quoted as saying "her group would've handled this [Iggy situation] very differently."
http://www.pasadenastarnews.com/news/ci_7198523

What Whitman actually meant is that since PHS has contracts to provide animal control services to different cities, they would have been required to remove Iggy in the presence of animal control officers and under much more stringent conditions - hence "differently."   Whitman lauded the owners of Mutts & Moms for their rescue accomplishments, stating, "We have worked closely and well with Mutts & Moms in the past.  We have honored them for their work."  Whitman recounted the story of a pit bull puppy who'd been raised in a small bunny hutch.  According to Whitman, Mutts & Moms was the only organization willing to accept the difficult task of rehabilitating this unfortunate animal - an accomplishment Whitman praised highly.

3.  The DeGeneres camp's contention that Mutts & Moms went to the media FIRST does not square with the timeline of events.  On the evening Mutts & Moms confiscated Iggy from the hairdresser's house, TMZ (also a Telepictures product) had been called to video the visit.  According to Keith A. Fink, attorney for Mutts & Moms, it was the DeGeneres camp who contacted TMZ - NOT the media shy, show-biz naive owners of Mutts & Moms.  Indeed, my own experience with the owners of Mutts & Moms bears witness to their abject fear of media, since their own attorney was unable to goad them into speaking with me or with the other media attempting to make contact.

4.  The "Moms" in the name Mutts & Moms doesn't identify Marina and Vanessa as "moms" who rescue animals.  The "Moms" in Mutts & Moms denotes the organization's inspired mission to adopt mother dogs from shelters once they have given birth and nursed their puppies - an arduous undertaking, since mother dogs are often euthanized after nursing their litter.

In the final analysis, this Ellen DeGeneres-Mutts & Moms-Iggy saga is a private issue between private individuals that landed on the national stage.  If Ellen intended to use her show as the platform to manipulate this matter, she has made a dangerous error in judgement.  She has crossed the regrettable line from comedy pulpit to bully pulpit and used her mega platform to attack "the little guy" - or in this case - "the little gals."  And it's caused significant harm.

Yesterday on the phone, Laura Mandel, Vice President of Publicity for Telepictures, described Ellen as "a real person with real emotion."  On this there is no doubt.  But Ellen is also an incredibly powerful woman able to influence legions of fans.  Beyond her cameras are millions of viewers she knows nothing about, capable of acts she can't control.  They worship Ellen and protect her with a vengeance - and right now their vengeance is centered on two frightened rescuers who don't deserve their wrath.   I've read some fan comments.  Their hatred for Marina and Vanessa is shocking.

In the entertainment business, there is the long-standing concept of "a pro."  "A pro" is an entertainer who, regardless of personal travails, faces the audience and does the job.  In my opinion, Ellen is teetering between a "pro" and a woman who's unclear about her "job."   She's abused her power by publicly challenging those less powerful.  Rosie O'Donnell took on the President.   Rosie also took on Trump.   Others take on corporations, like Exxon and the airlines.  But Ellen has challenged two defenseless woman with no resources - no fame, no fortune, no accolades and no ovations.  Only attorney Keith Fink has come forth to champion their cause.

Across the nation, because of this fiasco, animal rescue organizations have taken an enormous hit - for which helpless animals will bear the brunt.  To help revitalize this noble profession, I'm calling on Ellen DeGeneres to step up and intercede.  I'm asking her to use her brilliance, her compassion, and her enormous reach to convene a panel of rescue professionals on her own show as quickly as possible to discuss what these organizations do and how they do it.  There are lessons that need to be learned and rules that must be understood.   My hope (though far-fetched) is that if Ellen does choose to do this, Mutts & Moms will participate - without the caviat that Iggy be returned to Cheryl and her daughters.  There's an important lesson for Cheryl's daughters in all of this that has somehow been forgotten.  The fact is, a contractual rule was broken.   Sometimes the greater lesson is understanding the need to honor the rule - rather than the need to circumvent it.

On a personal note:  For those who believe I'm holding Ellen to an unfair standard by suggesting she shield her personal issues from her viewers, I'll answer with this.  One of the greatest gifts I've been given in my lifetme is the opportunity to teach.  Every day I face rooms filled to capacity with adult students who care a great deal about me.  I've faced them when I'm happy and I've faced them when I'm sad.  I've faced them after losing family members, losing beloved animals, losing relationships, undergoing surgery, and more.  But I neither share nor show my burdens.  It is not my student's job to bear them.  Nor is it Ellen's viewers' job to bear hers.   We are simply there to serve.

ellen's puppy give away

This is not the first time that ellen and her partner decide that an adopted does not suit their home life/style.  The previous incident which comes to my mind happened several years back, and the partner at the time may have been anne heche (?).

dogs and the star

Ellen may have been in the wrong to just give away a dog, with minimal time i  her household. Animals do need to adjust to each other. But, the force of Mutts and Moms shows a staunch authoritarian attituide--I can do this because I can do this. The appropriate response would have been to chat with Ellen, inform her of the rules, explain the situation, then check out the hairdresser's family (Which, apparemntly, had already bonded with the pup), and if the family was suitable, allow it to keep Iggy. That would have been approriate and acceptable practice. Result: no media flare-up, no bad publicity, no lawyers. Just common sense human decency. As to a "pro" not using the media--well, this IS entertainment media. "Pros" use them every minute of every day for every reason. And, the media go along with it all.

Mutts and Moms Screwed Up

They made an error in judgment, not evaluating the family Ellen DeGeneres gave the dog to. That was a mistake. But the rule, that people adopting dogs have to give them back if they don't keep them, seems to be fair, since, otherwise, people could game the system and "adopt" so the pets could then be sold or worst. Apparently, this is a common policy, widely adopted by pet rescue companies.

I'm sure Ellen DeGeneres, if she had it to do over again, would have worked it much differently, getting Mutts and Moms to evaluate the family she wanted to give the dog to.

I'm sure Mutts and Moms would, if they had it to over again, would have taken a look at the family DeGeneres gave the dog to. Their rigid response is not very defensible. But their intentions were right and they were not getting rich doing what they did. They erred on the side of looking out for the dog.

My first response, before looking into this myself, being a dog owner, was that Mutts and Moms were mean control freaks. But the more I learned about this the more it seemed that both parties screwed up and neither wanted to let this go where it went.

It's sad, where things are now. But wishing bad upon the people who make efforts to rescue dogs-- not just the Mutts and Moms, but all animal rescue people-- that's a really big mistake to make, especially if you care about dogs. They've developed policies because they want to protect dogs.

Misuse is a Misnomer

Had Katie Couric broken down on the news and cried about a puppy adoption gone bad, THAT would be unprofessional.  Ellen isn't a journalist, she's a personality.  On her show, she doesn't just interview people about their latest book, she talks to the audience about what's important in her life.  That's the style of her show.  I wouldn't expect it from Couric, Charles Gibson, Brian Wilson, of even from Leno, Letterman, or Kimmel, but I would expect it from Oprah, Tyra, or Ellen.

These two women have lost their business...

as a result of Ellen's use of media.   I have YET to hear how Ellen may help to remedy that situation.  If you truly believe Ellen doesn't know her own "reach," I'm afraid you're being naive.

Had Ellen kept this a private matter and not broadcast it on her show... these women wouldn't be living in fear with no livelihood and no way to care for the many animals in their charge.   At this point, they've been threatened with harassment on every level - through the IRS, building codes, zoning codes, and on and on.

How much retribution must one generate to qualify as misuse?   I didn't choose that word cavalierly.  I wrestled with "abuse" and settled on "misuse."  I didn't want to be harsh.

There is still time for reconciliation - which is why I wrote this piece.  This isn't a topic I tend to focus on.   However, when the use of media results in undue harm, it needs to be addressed.    And for the record, every day these women remain out of business and in hiding, another Iggy is passed by - because they can't do their rescues from the shelters.

The damage to these two women has been shameful and Ellen can call it off.   It's in her court now.   She can step up or back down.   I believe she will take the right action.  I trust her to take the right action.

These women should be out of business.  They are horrible, horible people.  They are greedy and should not be handling any living beings period.  Thank goodness for Ellen to expose such on her show.  Take all living creatures from the women and show them that life counts for this poor dog and the little children they hurt.  Expand it to all others who think they can misuse the presumed power they think they have.  Shut them down.

How dare you!!!  Milazzo! you are the abuse and misuse.  Thank God Ms Ellen has the media to report the abuse of such hatefull women as these two to abuse the opportunity to abuse the system these two women have done to hurt other beautiful folk as the poor children and blessed animal that they have and YOU have endorsed for this abuse.  Shame on you.  I have read many of your articles of which I have primarily agreed with.  Should I reasonably think this over.  All creeps such as these two abusive women and you to say that you are right and all other humanely correct humanely loving, caring dog lovers and child caring folk to be abusive.  How dare you to wright such an abusive article such as this.  You are guilty of the same thing you accuse Ms DG of doing.  How dare you!!!  Then to say that the opinion of the correct response of those who say such abusers such as these two haters be questioned.  Why?  Think about this people, why is it right for this thug to say she is right and that Ms DeGen is wrong?  BY THE WAY, I HAVE BEEN POPPING INTO THE LIBERAL, COLLECTIVISTIC, SOCIALISTIC ANTI-AMERICAN SITE FOR A VERY LONG TIME BUT HAVE NOT RESPOSDED TO ANYTHING ON THIS SITE UNTIL NOW!!!   Why?  Because, I have had enough of most screaming on this site such as this against free speech.  You may sensor me because of what I am saying but what has this woman said and these tww mean spirited women done.  The plite of these tow mean spirited women should be banned from dealing in placing blessed beloved animals such as little Iggy.  You know as well as I do that they did not handle this correctly or it would not be made known to you.  Thank goodness for Ms. DeGen.

Mutts and Moms attorney says

the hairdresser's family would not fill out the paperwork to adopt the dog. If this is true, that simple action could have prevented this problem. (Of course I saw the attorney interview on Bill O'Reilly - not a reliable source for true facts!)

An associate of mine swears that Ellen is not as friendly off camera as on. He interviews celebrities, and says she is ice cold until the camera rolls. This colored my opinion, but I thought her crying on the show was inappropriate and not helpful to anyone.

Most of these rescue groups encourage folks to let the new animal visit the animals in the home before making a final decision. They probably feel very frustrated when someone rejects a pet after accepting the responsibility. I hope these people do not lose their rescue agency.

Are rules never to be changed?

I love dogs and have had several as companions. I almost adopted a rescue dog this Thursday.    A long time dream.  I did not, but am writing this to say I have been involved with at least one rescue agency this week, one that I liked very much.

I feel Ellen is wonderful to be a real person on her show and not a plastic robot.

The dog group needed to go out of their way to let the new adopters keep the dog.  Rules can be authoritarian and very harmful, if applied in a "this is it" way.  Why didn't they go out of their way to have a family who wanted Iggy keep the dog?  Why did they take a dog away from a family who wanted Iggy and had already bonded?  Why didn't they find out why the family did not want to sign the papers?

The writer of this op ed article gives us only one side. The don't break the rules side.  No exceptions.  For me, that is not any place I want to be.

Her idea of having a panel on Ellen's show is a good one, but only if BOTH sides are represented, not only that all such agencies are wonderful or wonderful all the time.  Life is not black and white.  There are grey shades.

I watch, e.g. on Animal Planet the stories of the ASPCA rescuing dogs.  I am so often horrified about the racism - reflecting with animals exacly the racism of the dominant culture with humans.  On the ASPCA shows, so many times there are the white animal people, the authoritarians,  taking custody - often violent - of people of color whom they are accusing of mistreating their animals.  I know the ASPCA does wonderful talk, but this racism is egregious.

I am wondering if race was one of the issues in this story about Iggy.

Sheila

Your bias is coming through. DeGeneres went to the rescue agency. She looked them up. She signed a contract. She agreed to the stipulations. Why did she not simply call the rescue agency, tell them it is not working out with the dog, recommend the family with address and phone number?

I can tell you what happens to most adopted pups and it is the reason animal rescue mission are so serious about keeping the rule. That rule is not there to be ignored even if you are Ellen Degeneres. After pup or kitty poops in the floor of every room, chews up shoes and electrical cords while demanding they be fed and watered regularly, groomed and trained, provided medial treatment, and taught not to playfully attack house guest;  then in the best cases they are taken to a local pound where they are killed ; in the worst cases they are taken out in a strange neighborhood, kicked out of the car and left alone. In the neighborhood the deserted animals are attacked by other dogs and beastly adults, left to starvation and thirst, hit by cars, eaten up with tics and fleas until the mangy ugly result dies in the middle of some busy street.

Degeneres should give this family's business a couple hundred thousand and donate a couple million to educating the publilc on what happens to animals in our human world. Give me a break! She could drop five or six million for animal care and never know she missed it the pocket change.

Ms. Milazzo was being very courteous and generous with EDG. I really do not think EDG deserves such courtesy.

What Dribble!!!!

You want a pet.  You are lonely.  You decide to go to a shelter to get a pet instead of buying one from a commercial dead zone.  You pay plenty to get the dog or cat etc. you fall in love with at the shelter. Then as soon as you hand over a handful of money to have the previledge to take this pricious life home you are handed a piece of paper about ten sheets long to sign before you can take this pricious life home.  What are you signing?  Believe me you dont know.  All you know is that if you dont sign you cant have this pricious little life.  You do the same thing when you are buying a house.  If you dont sign you dont get....  Bad business.  Contract...agreement...what is it really?   Control.  We know better than you.  ???  Oh humanity....where have we gone today?  Greed. Greed. Greed.  Power, Power, Power....  Where is honesty?  Where has humanitarism gone?  Thank goodness for the opportunity of Ms DeGen had to let the public know of this uglyness.

Pick the Right Dog.

Years ago a dog rescuer explained to me that the reason they want to make sure a dog goes to a good home was so that no one would turn around and sell the dog to a lab or puppy mill. If you want a pet, go to the local  county animal shelter  or call the Humane Society and get one you feel would make a good pet. I am so upset  about the notion that only pure breeds dogs are worthy of adoption. Get you a dukes mixture and take it to the vet, if it has not already seen one. Most animal shelters have the dogs checked out before adoption and May have a spay /neuter rules. Local vets do the spay/ neuter for a lesser fee, if the animal shelter has an agreement with them. You have a fine pet and no unwanted puppies. A dog is not a fashion statement but a living breathing friend, if you respect it. I always feel they may be one more of God's gifts to us. Think long and hard before adopting a dog and if your life cannot accommodate one, donate money to help with the care of abandoned dogs

Yes, please, Do at least this.

My dog is so precious to me.  Thank God for my Gizmo.  Gizmo is a beautiful dachhund.  He is a miniature.  So tipical, so bueautiful.  What a blessed life.   Everyone should experience such love, devotion, admiration, such joy.  I got this loving creature from my animal hospital where my most belove cockers went for care and finally humanely ended life.  One from leukemia and the other from my own fault.  Unclean teeth leading to heart problems.  I as ignorant and did not know what I was doing to my precious baby.  So, this is true to so many of us not knowing that we are wrong.  In intentionally.  God help us.  Wake up.  We are human.  Lets learn what we are really doing to our love ones...  We may be inocent but never the less we are guilty of what we do...  Lets stop the wrong in the supporting of what we think we are doing wron thinking we are right and actually doing wront.  Just because we thi9nk we are right does not make it right.  Stop, look, listen.  These two women who did such a disastrious deed may be wrong but needless to say needs to be stopped.  All do in cases like this.  We need to think and do what is right and stop the wrong.  Put these women and all acting like them our to business.  Right and Wrong is what God gives us the ability to reason and free agency for.  Think, Think, Think...,.

You're right sort of

you're right about choosing the right dog to fit the circumstances. However most people choose their pet with less fore thought than a pair of shoes.

"MUMMY MUMMY can we have that puppy it's so cute, and I'll look after it..."

Anyone who has children would recognize that but reality is  very different isn't it mums?

I found that people in general do no research and generally don't know what they're buying.

What are its inbred traits? is ist big is it small ?will it shed fur (allergies house proud issues. How much room does it need ?Is it a water dog does it need swimming? does it need lots of grooming? how much will it eat? how much poop will it generate and how will you dispose of it? Is the dog easy to train does it cope with small 'inquisitive'children?does it like other dogs other people? will it bite? Dog breed vary greatly in all of the above. I chose thorobreds or dog I know the parents. By looking at the parents you can get an idea of the pup as an adult.

I am not opposed to mutts as some of the nicest dogs I know are that but one should be very careful when accepting a dog who's traits you don't know

In the final analysis a potential owner should research, research plan, and prepare for the pup almost as you would a baby. Like the ad says "a dog is for life not just Christmas."

The Dog is not the problem

From what I could figure out about this: Ms DeGen made a mistake.  The dog place rectified the mistake. Rather than putting the whole thing behind her  Ms DeGen made another mistake by bringing her personal problems on the air where her hairbrained fans could do what she knew, if she had a half a brain herself, they would do - go into an idiotic frenzy.   She is another entitled Hollywood idiot who thinks that they matter in this world.  Why anyone pays any attention to what they do and what they say is beyond me.  Can you say "high school thespians"?

Watching something like her show is like watching a semi-literate show like Jerry Springer which demeans the people who participate in it, the studio audience, and anyone dumb enough to watch it.

You are what you watch.

Oh my gooodness!!!!How Sad....

Thank goodness for Ms DeGen.  This should not have gone to this length.  Had these two women been humanitarian they would not have just taken the dog from these two little girls.  They would have correctly communicated and satisfactorily concluded this issue in a positive manner.  They did not.  Instead they acted like bad people.  You and everyone should think this through.  They did wrong and should not proceed any further dealing in this kind of business.  I am sure Ms DeGen would have given these women a lot of money to do the right thing.  This kind fo greed and bad business should be made public and the right thing be done.  Close them down and allow good business be promoted in the stead of bad.  How cruel to the poor children and this pitiful little dog to have to go through.

Bad news all around

There are plenty of fingers to point here.   DeGeneres (and deRossi) did break their contract, even they admit this.  However, I'm not exactly sure what in the world the Moms & Mutts folks were thinking to handle this situation the way they did.  Have they heard of the Dixie Chicks?  Public backlash against real or perceived "injustice" is nothing new.  In an instant information age, when everyone in the country can hear about an incident in minutes, clearly, they should have had some kind of "bull session" with their attorneys or advisors before taking on a beloved TV personality who has an Emmy award winning TV show, and is well-known for her love of animals.   Without evidence that the current owners were harming the animal, taking a breath and coming up with a different plan would have saved everyone some heartache.  Not only that, but the animal adoption industry is now under negative scrutiny.  Animal shelters and rescue workers come out looking like obsessed control freaks who have unrealistic expectations of potentional pet owners and adoptors.  I have had first hand experience with this myself.  We are a family of 4, working parents,  kids aged 10 and 12.  Large fenced yard, experience with pets, I'm a nurse.  You would think we'd be ideal.  But no, we have tried unsuccessfully to adopt through our local shelter. Reasons vary, we have two cats (so no dogs that don't "adapt" to cats)  our children are "too young",  we are gone too long during the day.  After our two labradors passed away, we thought our next dog would be a "pound puppy" but I won't put our family through it again.  The kids get all excited about the dog, then we are "denied".    I support the Animal shelter with financial donations but will buy our next pet through the want ads.  Those animals need homes too.  Meanwhile, unwanted animals sit, their futures to be determined by these so-called experts who wait for the most perfectly perfect of owners who apparently are non-working, childless, catless, heiresses and heirs who will make homemade dog food and take their dogs on playdates.  I know there are plenty of rational folks out there in the animal adoption industry, but this incident highlights some of the problems people are experiencing.  I'm not naive, people who abuse or neglect an animal are incredibly heartless, and should be proscuted to the fullest extent of the law, but the majority of folks out there just want to help animals and want to find an animal to be a member of the family.
