Restoring Credibility Through International Cooperation

When I was a senior in high school I participated in the model united nations program.  As thousands of students do each year, I chose a country to represent as part of the student program.  In my case I chose Norway, the home of my mother's ancestors.  I was very excited to receive mailings from the Norwegian embassy, which I diligently researched in order to accurately represent my country of choice.  Sitting in our high school library we passed resolutions to abide by strategic arms control and non-proliferation agreements.

It has been more than twenty years since I participated in that program as a high school student, and in that time a lot has changed in the world.  The cold war ended with the fall of communism in eastern Europe, the economic engines of southeast Asia and China have changed the playing field in global politics, free trade agreements have devastated the American economy and global awareness has become focused on the dangers of greenhouse gas warming of the planet.

Some things stay the same though, from one decade to the next.  Men and women still fall in love, the birds sing and the bees buzz, the rain falls and the wind blows, and the United States fails to pay its dues to the United Nations, year after year, to the tune of some $2.8 billion dollars.  According to the United Nation Association of the USA, the U.S. owed $633 million in arrears to UN peacekeeping alone and this number is estimated to increase by between $250 million to $1 billion over the course of 2008.

The right wing yak machine loves to discuss the ineffectiveness of the United Nations on talk radio.  Day after day, week after week, the public is bombarded by arguments against international cooperation and peacemaking.  In the meantime, the Bush administration follows a unilateral approach to foreign policy.  As a result of these twin towers of ignorance and power, the United States is now perceived internationally as a rogue superpower, willing and able to ignore international agreements and national sovereignty in the name of fanatical patriotism and war profiteering.

The United States still has a role to play in the United Nations, but only if we elect representatives who will respect the historic role that the UN plays as an agency of first resort for all international agreements.  Whether it is peacekeeping, refugee assistance, development, food aid, nutrition, global health, disarmament, weapons inspection, disease prevention, global education or family planning, there is a UN program available to deal with that situation.  The United Nations is an integral element of global peacemaking and development.

As a candidate for federal office I support full funding of the United Nations and associated programs. I believe this is the right thing to do, not just for the international community, but also for the United States.  I firmly believe that the way to restore US credibility in the international community is by fully paying our dues and supporting the UN in their role as an agency of international cooperation.

My name is Chris Lugo and I am a candidate for the US Senate seat in Tennessee. I am running as a progressive because I believe that the time has come to end the war in Iraq, ensure that all Americans have access to affordable, quality health care and to restore common sense and decency to our national dialogue. For far too long we have neglected the needs of the poor in America, allowing hundreds of thousands in Tennessee to go without healthcare and millions nationally. For far too long we have let our education system be a secondary priority to the military industrial complex. As a result of these misguided funding priorities we have a graduation rate in Tennessee of only about 60% statewide for high school students and only about one quarter of all Tennesseans graduate from college. We must take solid steps to ensure that all Americans have safe and affordable housing, that we live in a clear and healthy environment, and that we take steps to address the deep divisions of inequity that still persist in our society. I believe in the American dream and I believe that all Americans deserve the opportunity to have a rich and meaningful life, but the only way to ensure that these priorities are addressed is to make certain that our government makes this a priority, that our elected representatives make peace and social justice a priority on a national scale. We are at a crossroads in history, and Tennessee faces a choice which we all face. Do we choose to continue down the path of abandonment, of hopelessness and fear or do we choose to embrace the compassionate, hopeful elements of our national identity? I for one, choose to hope. I believe that the government is here to serve the people and our elected leaders are here to serve you.

Get out Of U.N. and end the Wars

The U.N. is a front for Rockefeller's One World Order. Bush said he had a U.N. mandate to invade Iraq. Rockefeller donated the land for the U.N.  Move it off our shores, along with the CFR, Bilderbergers, Trilaterals, and the Illumaniti. No to the U.N. and the North American Union!

America is a strident screaming self-satisfied whore.

How can a nation run by liars, bullies, and crooks have any credibility?

Bush

"Bush said he had a U.N. mandate to invade Iraq."

Bush also said Iraq had weapons of mass destruction and posed a threat to the US. Of course he was lying. Almost everything he says is a lie. Bush didn't have a UN mandate. The UN Charter prohibits countries from engaging in pre-emptive invasions.

The UN is a failure because of the UN Security Council. The UN Security Council is mostly made up of imperialist countries that control the UN agenda. Other problems with the UN is that they're involved in too many different things. I support international cooperation so long as national sovereignty is respected. The only things the UN should be involved in is promoting peace and upholding human rights. Unfortunately the UN has a very dismal record in these areas thanks to the imperialists' control of the UN. There needs to be public oversight of the UN's activities also.

UN

I agree the UN should leave the US and relocate to another country. We shouldn't pay our debts to the UN until the UN is adequately reformed.
