The Scottish Nationalist Party has taken the most votes in the election here and Scotland is shell shocked.

Whilst there is no question that Scotland will suddenly leave the United Kingdom a seismic event has occured.

When I was a kid they were the * Tartan Tories*, meaning a bunch of small minded Scottish Conservatives. Not now.

Their leader Alex Salmond is a sharp, witty, urbane man who will cause the political establishment in London serious concern.  He has promised a referendum on independence within 4 years.

Will it happen?..I dont know...no one does..people are wandering about Edinburgh with silly expressions.  I will keep OPED informed.

What happened?  Scotland has voted Labour since 1964 ..solidly.

Even when Thatcher won a landslide in England she only got 3 votes here!

The gorgon never impressed anyone north of the border and the Labour party took us for granted.

Then came Blair.  He romped home here. We loved him .

I met him..shook his hand.  " Go for it Tony"  I said.

And not....." Dont go to war you oily bas&ar*"!

IRAQ. Thats what done it.

I am so proud of the people of Scotland I could burst.

'Hamish ' is an antiwar writer socialist- scientist and musician living in Scotland.
