SCOTLAND THE BRAVE

The Scottish Nationalist Party has taken the most votes in the election here and Scotland is shell shocked.

Whilst there is no question that Scotland will suddenly leave the United Kingdom a seismic event has occured.

When I was a kid they were the * Tartan Tories*, meaning a bunch of small minded Scottish Conservatives. Not now.

Their leader Alex Salmond is a sharp, witty, urbane man who will cause the political establishment in London serious concern.  He has promised a referendum on independence within 4 years.

Will it happen?..I dont know...no one does..people are wandering about Edinburgh with silly expressions.  I will keep OPED informed.

What happened?  Scotland has voted Labour since 1964 ..solidly.

Even when Thatcher won a landslide in England she only got 3 votes here!

The gorgon never impressed anyone north of the border and the Labour party took us for granted.

Then came Blair.  He romped home here. We loved him .

I met him..shook his hand.  " Go for it Tony"  I said.

And not....." Dont go to war you oily bas&ar*"!

IRAQ. Thats what done it.

I am so proud of the people of Scotland I could burst.

SCOTLAND THE BRAVE

While I share Hamish' contempt for Blair's using New Labour to effect the recrudesence of British Imperialism, the wide-spread voting irregularities in the last Scots' election would have rightfully invalidated the results in most countries.

The poor administration of the Scots' election is yet another black mark against Anglo-American's arrogance in exporting what they cannot administer domestically: democracy.

Counted Out

The ballot paper was odd and complicated and a lot got it wrong.

Embarrassing for our famed level of literacy.

I dont suspect a plot  a la Florida but it was uncomfortable...my local representative won by less than the spoiled ballots!

 There will be court action.

Right on!

I'm glad to read this. I didn't know that Thatcher was so unpopular in Scotland or  that the current Scottish Nationalist leader was so enlightened. I'm of Scots descent myself, so I always take an interest. Certainly, Blair provided Bush with an unfortunate international legitimacy for the war in--or rather, on--Iraq. Please keep us informed.

Good old Salmond

Salmond was the only major figure who opposed the bombing in Yugoslavia.

He has promised to bring the troops home ASAP.

I believe him without hesitation.

Scotland

Hamish, wish I could share your optimism. It's beginning to look like the next year will be taken up by infighting and bickering. This has gererally been my experience with Scottish management, being RIGHT is more important than anything. Naturally I agree re: Tony B. He could have gone down as one of the greats, now he's that commander guy's minion. Here's hoping someone will remember it really is about us people. Davy, Yank X pat of 23 years in the highlands and dearly loved and appreciated every minute of it. If we finally go to war against america :-) I'll be wearing the kilt.
