Official Account of 9/11: "Impossible", "A Bunch of Hogwash", "Fatally Flawed"

December 13, 2007 – Seven former senior engineers and scientists of the Federal government have severely criticized the official account of 9/11 and called for a new investigation. They are among a rapidly growing number of engineering, scientific, and architectural professionals challenging the government's story.

“A lot of these pieces of information, taken together, prove that the official story, the official conspiracy theory of 9/11 is a bunch of hogwash. It’s impossible,” said Lt. Col. Robert Bowman, PhD. [1]. With doctorate degrees in Aeronautics and Nuclear Engineering, Col. Bowman served as Director of Advanced Space Programs Development under Presidents Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter.

“There’s a second group of facts having to do with the cover up,” continued Col. Bowman. “Taken together these things prove that high levels of our government don’t want us to know what happened and who’s responsible. Who gained from 9/11? Who covered up crucial information about 9/11? And who put out the patently false stories about 9/11 in the first place? When you take those three things together, I think the case is pretty clear that it’s highly placed individuals in the administration with all roads passing through Dick Cheney.”

During his 22-year Air Force career, Col. Bowman also served as the Head of the Department of Aeronautical Engineering and Assistant Dean at the U.S. Air Force Institute of Technology. He also flew over 100 combat missions in Viet Nam as a fighter pilot.

Criticism of the official account also extends to government scientists. “The issue of knowing who was really behind the 9/11 attacks is of paramount importance to the future of our country, because the ‘official’ assumption that it was the work of 19 Arab amateurs does not match the available facts,” writes David Griscom, PhD, a retired government research physicist. A highly esteemed researcher, Dr. Griscom spent 33 years at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, D.C. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society. He was the recipient of the 1993 N.F. Mott Award sponsored by the Journal of Non-Crystalline Solids, the 1995 Otto Schott Award offered by the Carl-Zeiss-Stiftung (Germany), a 1996 Outstanding Graduate School Alumnus Award at Brown University, and the 1997 Sigma Xi Pure Science Award at NRL. He is the principal author of 109 of his 185 published works, a body of work highly cited by his peers.
Dr. Griscom continued, “I implore my fellow physicists and engineers who may have the time, expertise, and (ideally) supercomputer access to get to work on the physics of the World Trade Center collapses and publish their findings in refereed journals … Surely [the] Orwellian consequences of public ignorance constitute more than sufficient motivation for any patriotic American physicist or engineer to join the search for 9/11 Truth!”

The improbability of the collapse of World Trade Center Building 7 is a major concern of scientists, engineers and architects. The building was 610 feet tall, 47 stories, and would have been the tallest building in 33 states. Although it was not hit by an airplane, it completely collapsed into a pile of rubble in less than 7 seconds at 5:20 p.m. on 9/11. In the 6 years since 9/11, the Federal government has failed to provide any explanation for the collapse. In addition to the failure to provide an explanation, absolutely no mention of Building 7’s collapse appears in the 9/11 Commission's “full and complete account of the circumstances surrounding the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.” [Video of the collapse can be seen at http://www.whatreallyhappened.com/IMAGES/WTC7_Collapse.wmv ]

Joel S. Hirschhorn, PhD

Another senior Federal engineer who seriously questions the official account of 9/11 is Joel Hirschhorn, PhD, former Senior Staff Member, Congressional Office of Technology Assessment 1978 – 1990 and former Professor of Mechanical Engineering. Earlier this year, he wrote, “Many technical analyses cast doubt on the official explanation of the collapse of three World Trade Center buildings, including those presented by an impressive new group: Architects and Engineers for 9/11 Truth. ...

“When it comes to 9/11, we face the strong belief that only al-Qaeda caused 9/11. But analyses by many experts reveal the collapse of the three WTC buildings was not caused by the two airplanes exploding into the twin towers. Without getting into details that one can spend many hours examining on a number of websites, the general view is that the buildings were brought down by controlled demolition.” [3]

Dr. Hirschhorn also served as Director of Environment, Energy and Natural Resources for the National Governors Association. He’s testified more than 50 times before Congress on technology, science, and environmental issues. Prior to his government services, he was Professor of Metallurgical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin, Madison 1965 - 1978.

Dr. Hirschhorn continued, “Like other groups, Architects and Engineers for 9/11 Truth wants a new, honest and comprehensive study that considers all the evidence for controlled demolition. As a former engineering professor with growing skepticism about the official WTC story I share their concerns. First, let the technical truth emerge. Then, if necessary, cope with the inevitable political, conspiracy and other questions. But let us not allow a possible painful truth block the primary task of determining once and for all what caused the collapse of the WTC towers and building number 7.”

Another senior Federal engineer who questions the official account of 9/11 is Enver Masud, MS, PE, former Chief of the Strategic and Emergency Planning Branch, U.S. Department of Energy. An expert in electrical power grid management, he has consulted for the World Bank, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, and the United States Agency for International Development in Albania, Czech Republic, Egypt, Ghana, Indonesia, Latvia, Norway, Pakistan, Russia, Tanzania. Prior to his employment by the DOE, he served as Director of the Office of Engineering at the Public Service Commission in Washington, D.C.

Enver Masud, MS, PE

In a statement to this author, Mr. Masud wrote, “The 9/11 Commission Report is fatally flawed. The major conclusions of the 9/11 Commission Report -- the official, conspiracy theory -- are false. Among its many problems; 1.) It is entirely silent on the collapse of WTC Building 7. 2.) The FBI has admitted it has no hard evidence that Bin Laden was responsible for the attacks of 9/11. 3.) To this day, the hijackers' identities remain in doubt. 4.) Evidence, including the lack of adequate debris, at both the Pentagon and Shanksville contradicts the official theory of Flights 77 and 93. 5.) There is prima facie evidence of the controlled demolition of the WTC Twin Towers and Building 7.”

Another prominent skeptic of the official account of 9/11 is James Quintiere, PhD, former Chief of the Fire Science Division of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), who has publicly called for an independent review of NIST’s investigation into the collapses of the World Trade Center Towers on 9/11.

Dr. Quintiere made his plea during his presentation, “Questions on the WTC Investigations”, at the 2007 World Fire Safety Conference. “I wish that there would be a peer review of this,” he said [4], referring to the NIST investigation. “I think all the records that NIST has assembled should be archived. I would really like to see someone else take a look at what they’ve done; both structurally and from a fire point of view.”

“I think the official conclusion that NIST arrived at is questionable,” explained Dr. Quintiere. “Let's look at real alternatives that might have been the cause of the collapse of the World Trade Towers and how that relates to the official cause and what's the significance of one cause versus another.”

Dr. Quintiere, one of the world’s leading fire science researchers and safety engineers, also encouraged his audience of fellow researchers and engineers to scientifically re-examine the WTC collapses. “I hope to convince you to perhaps become ‘Conspiracy Theorists’, but in a proper way,” he said.

Dr. Quintiere also expressed his frustration at NIST’s failure to provide a report on the third skyscraper that collapsed on 9/11, World Trade Center Building 7. “And that building was not hit by anything,” noted Dr. Quintiere. “It’s more important to take a look at that.”

Dwain Deets, MS

Earlier this year, Architects and Engineers for 9/11 Truth created an online petition [5] urging Congress to immediately reinvestigate 9/11. More than 230 architects and engineers have signed the petition as of the date of this publication. Among the signers are Joel Hirschhorn and Enver Masud (both mentioned above), Dwain Deets, MS, and Edward S. Munyak, MS, PE.

Dwain Deets, MS, former Director, Aerospace Projects at NASA’s Dryden Flight Research Center, wrote in support of the petition, “The many visual images (massive structural members being hurled horizontally, huge pyroclastic clouds, etc.) leave no doubt in my mind explosives were involved [in the destruction of the World Trade Center].” [6]

Mr. Deets also served as Director of the Research Engineering Division at Dryden. He is the recipient of the NASA Exceptional Service Award and the Presidential Meritorious Rank Award in the Senior Executive Service (1988). He served at NASA for 37 years.

Edward S. Munyak, MS, PE, has over 20 years experience as a Fire Protection Engineer for the U.S. Departments of Energy, Defense, and Veterans Affairs. He is a contributing Subject Matter Expert to the U.S. Department of Energy Fire Protection Engineering Functional Area Qualification Standard for Nuclear Facilities. He serves as a member of the Board of Directors for the Northern California - Nevada Chapter of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers. A Licensed Professional Mechanical Engineer and Fire Protection Engineer in the State of California, Mr. Munyak currently serves as Fire Protection Engineer for the city of San Jose, California, the 10th largest city in the United States.

In his presentation at the 2007 National Fire Protection Association World Fire Safety Conference, “High Rise Buildings and Large Fires - Structural loads & thermal strain - What can happen” [7] , June 4, 2007, Mr. Munyak wrote, “We will find that the government investigations into building collapse [at the World Trade Center] must consider controlled demolition as far more probable since fire effects collapse could never be duplicated. ... The concentric nearly freefall speed exhibited by each building was identical to most controlled demolitions. The aircraft impact and fire severity effects were magnified in the NIST reports. Collapse of WTC 1, 2 & 7 were not caused by fire effects. ... The official reports and conclusions had many technical distortions and obfuscations of the excellent research input in arriving at a flawed, politically driven conclusion of building performance.”

The architects and engineers petition has now been signed by more than 230 architects and engineers. It reads,

“On Behalf of the People of the United States of America, the undersigned Architects and Engineers for 9/11 Truth and affiliates hereby petition for, and demand, a truly independent investigation with subpoena power in order to uncover the full truth surrounding the events of 9/11/01 - specifically the collapse of the World Trade Center Towers and Building 7. We believe that there is sufficient doubt about the official story and therefore that the 9/11 investigation must be re-opened and must include a full inquiry into the possible use of explosives that may have been the actual cause behind the destruction of the World Trade Center Towers and WTC Building 7.”

there is no more important historic crosshair to centre upon than the focus of the intellectual proffessorial community toward the physical facts of the destruction of these three buildings. the ramifications of that dark days work and the obvious nature of it changed the global situation forever, and much for the worse. has left the ideas of 'justice' and 'investigation' flapping in some very cold and lonesome winds.

To rest upon the official commission report leaves us as laughing stock to a ridiculous manipulation and, further, is insulting . everytime persons of knowledge voice 'concerns' over this awfull enterprise, adds help to prise another from inertia-- and we all know how fast things can come down with alittle bit of help.

It's not if but when now. This crime was simply too big to covered-up forever.

I don't care who gets hurt in exposing 9/11. If our system of government has failed us then it's time we found a new one. But I don't think it has to go the far. The Constitution is a solid document to re-build upon. What is needed is a complete restructuring of the wealth and how wealth is used.

Our country has been taken over by people that value profit over all else and see war as the best tool in gaining more wealth, power and control. The Constitution and the people mean nothing to the sub-humans. Greed is their creed, compassion never enters the picture. Soulless bottom-lines are blood-lines to the heartless perpetrators of this horrendous crime and these sub-human cretins deserve whatever punishment rendered.

Once the truth is known we can then cleanse the world of those that would have destroyed it in their blind attempt to have conquered it.

A Viable Conclusion Has Completed The Puzzle.

Ok everybody, put on the thinking caps and let's figure out if Planes were used or not that day. Photo's prove that flight 77 could not have hit the Pentagon, I believe that. I also do not believe that 93 crashed in Pennsylvania. No bodies, no blood was even found at the site. Now if these two planes were fake, then how about the two used on the WTC?

We know the towers were demolished with explosives, and having building 7 pulled. So what about the planes? What about the passengers? Where did they go? All the evidence that we have to bring about criminal proceedings, we still have the big question of what about the passengers? Where did they go? If we can solve this piece of the puzzle, we will have the complete picture.

Were those people really on those planes that day? Are there any common connections between all four flights? I heard most of the people on flight 77 worked at the Pentagon. But what about the other flights?

In spite of what Noam Chomsky has said--that the truth of 9/11 doesn't matter (Noam, what the hell are you thinking on that one, btw?)--I don't see any single issue that even comes close in importance, insofar as exposing how the American people have been duped--and how damn dumb they continue to be.

All we ask is that 2 + 2 = 4. Is that too much? I think not.

9/11 disinformation campaign to make it seem only Rightist?

I am encouraged by recent progress, but also concerned about the following. In recent months it seems as though there has been a media disinformation campaign to make it SEEM like those who want 9/11 truth are EXCLUSIVELY on the right followers of Alex Jones etc. Recently I have also noticed articles trying to argue that the 9/11 movement as a whole is anti-semitic etc.

Now one might say so what, disinformation campaigns are nothing new. But I have noticed a growing number of younger people who do not remember the MSM doubts and qustions of 2002 who now think THAT IT IS ONLY ALEX JONES TYPES who are running the 9/11 truth movement. In my opinion this might be a media psyop done with left-gatekeeping pubs like the nation magazine and it DOES NEED TO BE ADRESSED AND COMBATTED

You don't say in your piece "what specifically do these 'learned' men object to? The physical way the buildings collapsed? The sequence of factors that caused the buildings to fail? Who was responsible the design, the builders, the architects’ greedy son in law’s cost cutting (a’la Towering Inferno)? Do they all disagree on the same point(s)? Was the event orchestrated by someone else other than Al Qaeda? What? Where is their peer released proof? And what does the peer reviews say. I could claim that Clinton/ GWB are alien clones the originals are locked up in Roswell. This has the same weight until there is real proof! Noam Chomsky is right. Money be damned "SHOW US THE FACTS." There is simply not enough proof to make any other provable conclusion.

Until there is I suggest that America have a fund to buy bricks to build a bridge and get over it. There are more important things to worry about Children without health cover, Millions of adults without health cover. Lives are at stake here.

There seems to be an American obsession with conspiracies from the killings of JFK, Martin Luther King jr, to the where-a-bouts of Elvis to aliens.

Consider what the ex presidential advisor said some thing similar to this on TV down under. “ We shouldn’t be frightened by events in the newspapers because by definition they are sensational, ratings grabbing ….and… relatively rare. It’s what’s not in the news that should concern us 4000 people died tragically in 9/11 but we (US) loses 40000 people each year to road toll, 20000 to Breast Cancer and a similar amount to prostate cancer. !00000’s to obesity & 500000 per year to smoking related diseases. Do we spend Trillions on declaring war on General Motors, or Toyota or on tobacco companies…no….Should we be concern about terrorism yes ...”. He went on to say America should be wary not terrified. The Brits lost 100000's to the Blitz but they went on with life why can't America . The attack that proved that the all mighty United States Or America is vulnerable after all? 9/11 Cause in 692 Words (and a quote)

The terror and carnage of 9/11 was the result of ongoing and escalating tensions within the religion of Islam and has nothing to do with being "duped" by the U.S. government. Through his perceived successes with the Afghan jihad in driving out the Soviets, Osama bin Laden believed that his message of Islam was THE message of Islam. The benefits of jihad are that it (1) radicalized a religious conviction further and (2) short-circuited the need to do the political yet time consuming work needed to change a governing process. The later is especially handy when installing a theocracy that's not overly concerned with the people's representation.

As the only "true" message, it could, should, MUST be exported to other Islamic countries that had lost their own religious convictions. The increasingly authoritarian regimes in the Middle East that aligned themselves with the West and imprisoned fellow Muslims for speaking their convictions only fueled bin Laden's belief that radical change was warranted. Couple this belief with America's steadfast support of Israel, including the 1982 invasion of Lebanon, and it was just a matter of time before bin Laden and America would meet or... clash.

That clash took the form of his call for jihad against the "defilers of Islam". In particular, these were the Americans and others that were permitted by the royal family to stage in Saudi Arabia in response to Saddam Hussein's invasion of Kuwait in 1990. Both of these actions were affronts to Islam or so thought bin Laden. The benefit, though, to focusing on America and the West is that it shifted the jihad's battle from a near enemy (in the form of authoritarian but Islamic regimes) to a far enemy (American infidels occupying the holy lands).

Remember, this is the ideology that controlled a very large portion of the world between the 7th and 15th centuries. No small feat in those days. Were it once had the power it glory, should it not have it again provided they remain a pure ideology?

America, as the world's only superpower and perceived "bully" to Arab countries as it related to oil production and Israel's existence (e.g., Camp David Peace Accords), needed to taste the "humiliation" that Islam had felt for generations under the yoke of the West and its imperialist conquests (England and France especially and the dividing of the Ottoman Empire in the early 20th Century) since the 15th century.

While occasional nips at the Beast (e.g., Lebanon 1982, Somalia 1993, WTC 1993, African embassies in 1998, and the U.S.S. Cole in 2000) exemplified that it could bleed, the American "paper tiger" that always ran from past confrontations needed to be put in its place once and for all. His deep-set contempt for America and belief that it would run once again and away from the Middle East was the strategic flaw made by bin Laden with regard to permitting the 9/11 attacks. This strategy, meant to teach the Americans about humiliation, backfired and threatened al-Qaeda's very existence.

The continued problem with bin Laden is that his message of truth that refocuses Muslim attention on matters of faith conflicts directly with the vast yet silent majority of Muslims, desiring peace with the West. In a way, 9/11 was the result of silent Islamic infighting and the religion's inability to reconcile who its "true" leaders were and are today. Are the leaders fundamentalist Muslims that focus on the sword phrases of the Quran or are they more moderate voices that focus on the peaceful wording of the Text?

For the victims of 9/11 and the unfurling of the wrath of bin Laden's "paper tiger", the answer to that question is immaterial. Although al-Qaeda gained a tactical victory with the felling of the WTC towers, it lost significantly any strategic victory. The one positive outcome for bin Laden in 9/11 is that America's reaction to the attacks and its confronting the enemy "there" rather than "here" and on American soil is that al-Qaeda's ideology and militant, jihadist response will probably far outlast its creator thereby ensuring that the inner conflict of Islam continues to burn and result in 9/11-like collateral damage.

Sounds plausible

and it's the story we were sold by the 9/11 Commission and the MSM. It does not exclude the possibility that bin Laden was used as a patsy by others.

The links were interesting – especially the timeline; I haven't seen that one until today. A note of caution when using the timeline is tied to what makes it so useful, as a reference tool. Some of the initial reports detailed in the timeline were later identified as incorrect or missing information. While the timeline does a thorough job identifying these instances, there are some areas that the 9/11 Commission Report "filled in the blanks", using their own sources.

Yes, yes – I'm aware of the CIA tape destruction and its affect on this filling. The presumption here is that either the Commission got it "right" or "wrong". I believe the Commission feels they got it "right". There are a fair number of people who disagree. I think the Commission got it mostly right with a dash of wrong thrown into the mix.

But... I've looked at the collapse of the WTC structures from a number of perspectives and have concluded (as some may know) that the NIST report got it right. An issue that is often overlooked by 911Truthers is the massive amount of energy released in a very compressed time period (a second or two at most) when the perimeter columns buckled and failed. This failure resulted in the entire mass of the floor above the points of failure to convert its potential energy into kinetic energy.

This realization and transfer of such massive amounts of energy overwhelmed the structures' ability to transfer the shifting energy loads via its static support structure - http://www.nistreview.org/WTC-REPORT-GREENING.pdf .

To see an everyday example of this sudden realization of energy (albeit on a much, much smaller scale), build a "house" of playing cards one or two stories tall and three cards wide on the sides. Then, place a brick across the topmost "roof" of the house – the brick represents the mass of "x" number of "floors" above the one or two constructed floors. Slowly (and carefully) remove some of the vertical cards and watch the brick. At some point, the house's structure is compromised and the remaining structural members cannot support the brick's load. Consequently, the brick falls mostly in the vertical and takes the remaining portions of the "house" with it; the movement of the brick from resting atop the roof to resting atop the substrate is quick and the resulting release of energy is absorbed by the fallen cards and substrate, resulting in the loud "smack" and vibration of the substrate.

Now imagine a tower of cards that consists of many floors; so many that you no longer need a brick to simulate the mass of upper floors. While entertaining in that it illustrates a point, the card tower's failure differs from WTC 1 and 2 in that the space between the core and perimeter was not "filled" with supportive structural members - like that observed within the card tower - http://www.debunking911.com/towers.htm . Instead, the space was spanned by the horizontal spandrels or trusses that tied the core and perimeter columns together, creating essentially a tube within a tube.

The impact of the aircraft needed only to compromise (not destroy) the vertical columns of the internal support structure. The resulting fires further assisted the compromising of the structure via the weakened trusses between core and perimeter columns. With the removal from the impact of the protective spray-on fireproofing (which only grants a two-hour fire rating to start) and impingement of the fire suppression systems, the structures fates were sealed; it was just a matter of "when" they would fall; "Le jeu est fait !"

As a quick aside - has anyone ever wondered why spray-on fire proofing is even applied to exposed metal members of a structure before the perimeter walls are erected and internal partitioning begun? It's not for looks or the added weight. The application is a passive life safety feature that grants the building occupants enough time (i.e., two hours) to evacuate the structure BEFORE it can collapse. When you couple this passive feature with an active feature (e.g., a sprinkler system), both life and property are seemingly protected.

As the trusses weakened due to the heat from the fire, they expanded and pushed against the core and perimeter columns, which were still far stronger, and buckled. The result is that the trusses sagged in the vertical because of the force of gravity and buckling. Once the fires diminished and the sagging trusses cooled, they began to pull on the core and perimeter columns. With the core columns being the stronger, the perimeter columns were bowed inwards. Plane impacts, jet fuel, combustible materials and a massive release of energy CAN result in the felling of a 110-storey tower and still obey the laws of Nature via energy transfer. Unfortunately (for some), it IS this simple and no need exists for massive conspiracy that include the planting and time detonation of explosives or massive death rays from outer space by non-existent technologies.
