Is the question What Would Jesus Do

Or is it, What Would We Do To Jesus?

The doors of the evangelical Baptist Church are locked at night to keep the homeless out;

Jesus was homeless.

The powerful mock community organizers;

Jesus was a community organizer

We punish dissent against the government as unpatriotic and dangerous;

Jesus was a dissenter

We refuse to help the poor and shun the unemployed;

Jesus was poor and  unemployed.

We prohibit practicing healing without a license;

Jesus had no license.

We limit immigration to those with high-tech skills;

Jesus was a carpenter.

We call weak leaders who show compassion for our enemies;

Jesus loved his enemies.

Jesus Said:

"Unless your righteousness exceeds that of the Pharisees and Sadduces you by no means shall enter the kingdom of heaven".

Your right Bruce, the church/political scene today is very far from Jesus.

Just like it was 2000 years ago.

vidiotI am an old teacher who believes that if you are nice to people you make their life and your own much better.

Crucify him again of course

It is funny how little Christ actually change society.  The Pharisees are still with us today and sometimes sitting prominently in the front of the church.  Sometimes they are even Bishops.  My wife was a minister who was appointed to a small conservative church.  Some members thought it was either cute or funny to tell rascist jokes within earshot of us.  I could tell you astonishing stories of times that they demonstrated meanness and pettiness toward the poor and the oppressed.  My wife had many fights with them about this.  She would point out that as a church they were supposed to represent the body of Christ and they could not succumb to these unworth emotions.  This would not mean that they were hypocrites, it would mean that they were simply fellow pilgrims struggling with sin.

I have told this story before and I will continue to do so, but my wife had been following the disturbing stories that were coming from Guantanamo.  When the situation became obvious beyond reasonible doubt, my wife was in a dilemna.  She knew what would happen at that church if she addressed the issue.  Should she ignore it? Dance around it?  She admired Arundhati Roy who once said "Once something is seen, it cannot become unseen."  She read the lectionary for that week and it was obvious that she would have to address this very topic.

She gave a very good sermon that Sunday and appealed to people to listen to God's voice in their hearts and pray about this situation; to pray about it and listen to their hearts about how they should respond.  Some parishoners walked out before the Benediction and others would not speak to her as they left the church.  They would not have tolerated that sermon if it had come from Jesus Christ himself.  I don't remember how many weeks were there after that.  I won't detail the things that happened after that, suffice it to say it was one of the worst times in my life.  The people who loved and supported my wife were not knife fighters, the ones who didn't were.  I am paraphrasing Graham Green in "Monsignor Quixote",  but he said something like he was not fighting windmills, he was fighting giants.

My wife died about two months ago.  She lived a truly heroic life and faced the truth more bravely than anyone I have ever known.  I was so proud that many of the people who attended her funereal were homeless, retarded, shut ins, non English speaking immigrants (it was a bi-lingual funereal), and other maginalized people.

I am going to move and I will go to another church.  I will be very careful about what church I go to, but I know of one simple litmus test that I will apply right away.  If there is an American Flag in the sanctuary, I will shake off the dust and not waste any time with them.  That is idolatry, it is not even close to what we should be worshipping.

Your right!

As Jesus said: "Don't you know that friendship with the world is enmity with

God?"   This is Satan's world (at least it's temporarily under his control), friendship with it is a big mistake. Most "Christians" have swallowed this mistake "hook, line, and sinker". You can't mix the politics of this world with

the laws of God's kingdom. God bless you wife for speaking the truth.

AGREED

Recall during His temptations, Satan offered Jesus political power over all the kingdoms of the world, if He would worship Satan.  Jesus replied, "Depart from me.  For the Scriptures say, 'you must worship the Lord, your God:  serve Him only'."  Every time I see an American flag flying over the Christian flag at a Church, which is the law if flown on the same pole, I know that the Church is committing idolatry.  Jesus envisioned a Church that spread throughout nations, recognized by the love its members showed one another regardless of national boundaries.  This fact is clear from the "Great Commission."  Therefore, nationalism, which arose much later than Christianity, should never have taken root in the Church.  It only did so because large numbers of people that call themselves Christians are not.  They have turned being Christian into saying magical words, instead of completely submitting to an entirely different way of thinking and existing:  a way that requires trying to put the welfare of others before that of yourself.  One cannot succeed in business, government, or war, putting the welfare of others first.

Christianity is a hard religion, a narrow path.  But, like C.S. Lewis, I do not believe that the chance for salvation ends with death, but that during life one starts growing toward a final decision of a life of never-ending competition or a life of never-ending love.  One can get so far away from one or the other, even during life, that a choice becomes virtually impossible after death.

Ray Louis is an aging, burnt-out, radical activist. He is of the opinion that most people have no idea how harsh and brutal the government is because they have never really done anything to resist or oppose it. While he doesn't at all engage in the level of activism he once did, he still has strong and unconventional opinions. His fear is the Orwellian nightmare coming true (with a mixture of environmental degradation and peak oil as the backdrop).

It doesn't matter what we'd do to Jesus.

By "we" of course "we're" talking about the U.S. government which not everyone supports wholly all of the time.   Anyway, when the bar is set at crucifixion it's not as if peaceful people have always lasted forever and taken control.  Maybe he floated up to heaven and everything is OK, but he may have just died on the cross (period) and saw warmongering empires expand while promoting his "ideal" of pacifism as a model for the masses to emulate.

not many people know

not many people know how far their sins go--sometimes its like the ever-ready bunny-it just keeps going and going---a lesson i learned long ago -which still does not stop me from screwing up--for i will always sin as long as i am here- but remember jesus holds no loyality to any government-only people--and its a shame that we reap what our government has sown but it must be. jesus would have been taserd and arrested at the DNC, thats a given since they even arrested AMY GOODMAN--i mean come on-- just think what they would have done to JESUS!!!!--our country is not in the shape it is in right now because of its people --its because of our corrupt gov--which god is well aware of and will not let it stand for very long --wonder why rightous wars are won --and some go on and on?? its easy some are not just----our country is in this dilemna right now--as well as so many wars  in the near past--we cant win a unjust war-simple as that---when we are on the worlds center stage setting an example do you think god would let us win unjustly--get real---korea--viet nam-gulf--afaganistan--its  simple--and starting wars  under false rightousness or democrocy will only bring his wrath, as seen today--our dept is now more that the rest of the world combined-- OUR DEPT IS NOW MORE THAN THE REST OF THE WORLD COMBINED--thats incredible--everything is polluted-global warming- health care only for the rich- schools falling apart-every body in the world thinks of us as warmongers--chem spraying of the skies----here in uper wisconsin all the trees are dying or already dead--man we even had orange snow this spring--i lived here 52 years with relatives much longer and they have never seen it before either--none of our problems seem to get solved-WHY??--corrupt governments playing money and power games--- god will set an example of us for the world to see just like he does to every country that is corrupt---the good news is - he forgives on individual levels -so dont worry about our country-worry about yourself - try your hardest not to become wrapped  up in all the corruption arround you -he will judge and is judging are country as seen over and over and over in the news---he even allowed the soviets to kick our asses in georgia--our country is heading for even greater losses in the near future--its called revalations----read it till u understand it--for it is written to warn to those who study it enough to see through the parrables to weed out the ones who brush it off as bull and weird, for they look for an excuse to easly dismiss it for they do not want to believe it at the start---go to a kindom hall--study for a while and the truth will come out for your reward--and for those who do not believe in god but evolution--guess what-  mother nature is marching against us at a slow to you but mind boggling speed and to a gov who cant even solve 1 problem- like funding schools--i laugh my ass of at our attemps to control the weather and enviroment-------ha ha ha ha ha ha ha h ah --i pissed my pants-oh darn--ha ha ha ha ha haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

Jesus of Nazareth would not stand a chance!

The average Muslim has much greater respect for Jesus than your average "Christian".   If you are a real Christian and truly honor/respect Jesus then you will not be offended by my opening statement.   However, if your get all huffy, upset, and are screaming for my head then maybe you should take a deep breath and reconsider your beliefs and who they are based on.   The Religious Right could care less about Jesus and what he stood for and preached about.   For the most part they are into greed, judgemental persecution, and avarice, all of which Jesus was firmly against.   Why then do people continue to follow them blindly?

I agree

They follow people blindly and are so rife with self doubt and laziness that they don't know that following Jesus is an alive and an awake thing to do.  I learned alot years ago reading Harold Hill who wrote How to live like a King's Kid, meaning that if you take scripture as alive, and take action on it instead of being a spectator, that the world is vibrant with interaction of the mystical variety.  It led me to see the Verb part of God, as opposed to the Noun sitting up and far away...those televangelists have taken the verb out of God, except for their kill/war agenda, which love your neighbor refutes.  So thank you for your words Bruce.  Wouldn't Jesus have a time with all this taking of God's name for the vanity of occupations and such.

What Would We Do To Jesus

Interesting comments.  Jesus taught his Father's Spiritual Kingdom that is not of the world of man, nor worldly things.  He knew before he came into this world people had used the name of God or their God in vain with what was nothing more than their own evil worldly ambitions.  He knew the same would happen after he left this world.

Most people cannot comprehend this is the Devil's world.  As soon as human beings turned Jesus into Religion becoming State Sponsered Religion the rise of Religious Political Pharisee's began that enslaved people to both Religion & the State.  Of course there would be one here & there that would see the lies.  They would be freed by Jesus to his Father's Spiritual Kingdom.

He warned of false teachers & false prophets.  He warned many would come to him saying they taught, healed, & prophecied in his name & he would tell them to depart from him as they are the workers of inquity.   Later there is the warning about the False Apostacy as well as God sending strong delusion upon this world so they will believe a lie & they will all be damned.  Also the warning they will be killing thinking they are doing God a favor.  This is not limited to any one people.

And what of Caesar's world now?  The founders of your nation stated they patterned your Nation after Rome.  Rome a Republic that became a Empire, but still Jesus's Kingdom is not of this world, nor worldly things.

Many Beast Kingdoms(nations) listed in the Book of Revelation as well as the Beast, possibly the globalist world Govt being ushered into existance.  Then there is Mystery Babylon that fornicates will all the Kings of the earth.  Possibly through the U.N.?

Is the Beast then the world of man that never turned to the Spiritual Kingdom?  Is the Beast the world of man's Govts with all their worldly political philosophies, religious philosophies, & other philosophies?

Is the False Prophet the False Religions of the world that settled for being enslaved by Religion instead of turning to the Spiritual Kingdom?   Are the present day Religious Political Pharisee's worshipping the Beast & the Image of the Beast..or a Beast Kingdom thinking this Beast is doing God's work when this Beast is doing the Devil's work?  Again this is not necessarily limited to any one Religion, people, or Nation.

Jesus in the prophecy he gave to John stated the judgment God will place upon any who worship the Beast & the Image of the Beast as well as those who love Mystery Babylon.  There already is & will be more people who wake up & see these things happening.

Thank you everyone

I just wanted to thank everyone for reading and commenting, and I apologize for not replying to everyone.  This one was pretty personal to me, so I appreciate that people actually read it and cared enough to comment.

I do want to add that claiming to talk to God is grounds for mental commitment, unless, of course you are the President talking to God about wars or a candidate talking to God about oil pipelines.

The crazy people are the ones who claim to talk to God about love and compassion.  It is apparently perfectly sane to talk to God, as long as God's reply supports imperialism, capitalism, and obedience to the rule of men.

thanks again, everyone.

I find it hard to believe that the public feels led astray by President Bush for leading us into a war blindsided. Where were you when Bush went to the United Nations for help in finding out if Iraq had WMD's. How many chances did we give Saddam to come clean only to hear over and over again "I need more time, No you can't enter Iraq" How many chances did we give him? If it was up to the Democratic party would we still be waiting?

The Real Jesus

Jesus also said  "I am the way the truth and the life, no man cometh unto the father except by me"   He also said Thou shalt have no other Gods before me for I am a jealous God.  We have kicked God out of America, the last time we remembered  Him was on Easter  and Christmas..  and 9/11..  now that's all come and gone, we rely on ourselves to achieve our goals, we can do a better job without his help... We also don't believe that Satan is real ,  he's made up to scare little kids...  Does he ever have us fooled  Read  Revelation ..     Somebody please tell Obama that Iran and Russia are not small countries

Mercy, not reason!

Keep in mind that while Jesus was executed by the self-righteous, he never turned his back on them.  He loved his enemy, and forgave them in the end, too "they know not what they do."  Paul, as well, did not encourage hatred of leaders, but rather forgiveness.

In a democracy, especially in a democracy, the leaders reflect ourselves.  The self-righteous elect the self-righteous in both parties, who then spend all their time hating one another.  There is no love on either side of the political aisle.

Only the merciless will ever have need of mercy.  If you withhold mercy from your enemy, then to whom will you give it?  There is nobody else you could even give it too.
