Senator McCain, End the Pandering of Your Military Service

My father was a war hero. He served in the US Navy as a radar man aboard an LCT in the North Atlantic and in the Mediterranean; most notably, at Anzio. He nearly lost his life on several occasions and, as one of the younger, unmarried members of the crew, was often asked to perform dangerous duty in service to the nation.

My grandfather was a war hero, too. He served as an infantryman on the killing fields of Europe during the First World War, what was then called ‘The Great War’.

There have been many heroes who put their lives on the line for the people who served with them. It can easily be asserted that each and every member of the armed services who has seen action, whether or not they were wounded, captured or killed, be-medaled or not, are heroes worthy of our admiration and gratitude.

As my father and my grandfather expressed it when pressed to tell their stories, they did not consider themselves heroes but simple ordinary men who managed to stay alive because of the heroic actions of their buddies. This is a most common comment made by those we consider war-time heroes.

In interviews with the surviving members of Company E, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, ‘The Screaming Eagles’, whose stories were recounted in the best-selling book, ‘Band of Brothers’ by military historian, Stephen Ambrose, each and every man down-played their own part and honored those they served with. Their commanding officer, Richard D. ‘Dick’ Winters, expressed this attitude of noble humility best in an interview for the HBO series. When asked if he considered himself a hero, he responded with tearful eyes, that he wasn’t a hero, but he had served in the company of heroes.

My father, like Dick Winters and many thousands of other veterans, did not crow and puff themselves up by harping about their heroics during armed conflict. They were modest men who saw themselves as unextraordinary despite the extraordinary conditions under which they served. This attitude of gracious humility is not exclusive to any specific generation; it is an unspoken code that is followed by all of the combat veterans known personally to this writer.

Meaning no disrespect to Senator McCain, for he must be counted in the company of heroes, he does not share the noble humility of Dick Winters, or my father, or my grandfather. Senator McCain’s unceasing, self-serving reiteration of his experiences as a POW in order to brazenly advance his political career and this presidential campaign is most distasteful.

His service should be honored as should all be honored who have laid their lives on the line for the nation and their buddies. What is objectionable is Mr McCain’s vulgar, overweening use of his experiences in Vietnam to blatantly promote himself and the agenda of the Republican Party by playing off the sympathies and pity of the public.

Former senator and presidential hopeful, George McGovern, was once asked why he hadn’t trumpeted his war-time military career during the 1968 election campaign against Richard Nixon. After all, McGovern had served during World War II as a B-24 Liberator bomber pilot in the Fifteenth Air Force, had flown 35 missions over enemy territory and had been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for saving his crew. Surely, his campaign as an anti-war candidate would have been strengthened if he had simply made the American electorate aware that he was an honest-to-god, decorated war hero. McGovern shook his head dismissively and replied, “That would have been unseemly.”

Senator McCain, end the incessant rehashing of your war stories. It’s unseemly in a hero.

DC Rapier was born in a little log cabin he helped his father build in Kankakee, Illinois. Soon after, he whittled a guitar out of firewood and taught himself to play simple tunes.
"Having lived outside the USA, away from the incessant daily blather of info-tainment that sadly passes for news reportage and journalism, I think I can safely claim a more international point of view than most in the US who live within the corporate media's 'cone of silence' yet are inundated with spin-sters, shock-jocks and Faux News blow-hards."

Not relevant

Comment from Ratings:   talks about campaigns 30 years ago to compare to today? Today is different, mindset, politics, etc. Is not relevant.

I am currently retired. My favorite hobbies are karaoke singing, photography, and travel. I have immediate family living outside of Philadelphia, PA whom I visit once a year (during the Christmas holidays). I've also participated in a number of anti-war demonstrations since October of 2002. I consider myself a staunch defender of the US Constitution.

Stop Pandering Your Military Service, Senator McCain

Excellent article! It's long time that John McCain quit pandering his military hero status to the electorate. The fact is this: he bombed civilian targets from over 15,000 feet; never fought hand-to-hand combat with enemy forces on the ground. In other words, he doesn't own the hero status. There are countless heroes - dead and living - who sacrificed their own safety to rescue wounded comrades still in harm's way.

In addition, there were both Korean and Vietnam War POW's who never broke under the worst conditions, unlike McCain, who angered his own father for failing to adhere to the POW Code; i.e., giving no information beyond name, rank, and serial number.

Dick Overfield's right. The McCain campaign must end this pandering.

It's about American vets

Thank you, I appreciate that you took the time to comment. I posted the article with a slight title change, but D.C. Rapier wrote it. As a Viet Nam era Vet who did not see action & earned no medals (I feel VERY fortunate to have managed three years of service & an honorable discharge!), Rapier's article struck a deep note for me. I am proud of my service as difficult as it was, but I am even prouder of all the Americans who serve in the military, do the best they can, sometimes under unimagineably extreme circumstances, & return to civilian life asking little or nothing in return. I too find McCain's blustering hyper-militarism offensive. If you want to know the harsh reality of too many of America's Vets, go to a V.A. hospital & talk to the men & women there. I assure you, the experience will change forever the way you think about America's soldiers.

Log Cabin?

How on earth did you help your father build the log cabin you were born in? If you were able to acomplish this from the womb, maybe you ought to run for president.

Rapier's cabin

I am not sure Rapier is aware of this peculiar conversation, but I can say in his defense that I & my wife built a house in 1990 on a very remote island, named Lasqueti Island,  off the west coast of Canada. Take a minute & check out where it is on a map. Our son was born in the beginning stages of the work & as soon as he was walking he was helping. By three he was hauling wood & banging nails as I slogged through rain & mud (we were building our house in a rain forest) to get the thing finished & livable. The simple fact that my son was there doing what he could in his hilarious & wonderful way was one of the main reasons I was able to hang in there & get it done. When we left the island 7 years later, by my standards, the house was STILL not finished. I think Rapier's comment in his bio is about ordinary Americans & the living of their lives with honor & dignity. If he is fabricating or schmalzifying details about his past, it's his problem. OEN is an authentic, fearlessly open forum of ideas. It's an honor sytem. Granted, it's very abusable. Like I said, it's about Vets, who they really are & why they make the sacrifices they are willing to make. On the other hand, I think your suspicions are justified. We are living a cynical,  dark period in our country's history. A point Rapier did not make, but I will make is the sharp contrast between the greed is good I-don't-owe-anybody-anything-Republicans with whom McCain has cast his lot & the vast majority of the rest of Americans Rapier is talking about.
