Today, Saturday, February 11, the New Mexico Senate passed a resolution calling on Congress to pass a constitutional amendment to reverse what is perhaps the most destructive legislation since the Sedition Act of 1918 (repealed in 1921), the Supreme Court's appalling ruling in Citizens United v. FEC. The House had previously passed a similar resolution by a vote of 38-29.

New Mexico is the second state, after Hawaii, to put a call for repeal on the record.

The groups most active in making this happen were a coalition including Free Speech for People, the League of Women Voters of New Mexico, the New Mexico Trial Lawyers Association & Common Cause New Mexico .

Viki Harrison, of Common Cause, issued a statement today that passing a constitutional amendment will be a long and difficult process. With 82% of the American public making it clear it wants Congress to limit what corporations can spend in elections, New Mexico just shortened that process a bit.
