Twenty years ago when John McCain was first running for Congress,he reportedly told the following joke, which caused an uproar among women's groups at the time:

Did you hear the one about the woman who is attacked on the street by a gorilla, beaten senseless, raped repeatedly and left to die? When she finally regains consciousness and tries to speak, her doctor leans over to hear her sigh contently and to feebly ask, "Where is that marvelous ape?"

At first I was simply disappointed (but not surprised) that such an overt sexist attitude would not only be ignored by the mainstream media, but that it's perpetrator could go on to WIN the election in question and later get a reputation as a 'straight talker"!

However, as recent events unfold, I have come to regard the inherent metaphor of this crass joke as the EPITOME of the Republican presidential campaign!

John McCain and the Republican party have ravished and defiled our country over the past 8 years. I was looking for a clever synonymous way to paraphrase the joke and make my point, but actually the original line describes it better than any I can create:

This country has been "attacked, beaten senseless, raped repeatedly and left to die" by right wing extremists.

Our ethics have been pummeled. Our economy is near death. Our constitutional rights are on life support. Our military is strained. Our unity has compound fractures. And our national image as the model of world hope and prosperity lies tattered and bleeding in the street!

And most, importantly the group responsible for forcing us to endure this continuing humiliation over the past 8 years has pulled up it's zipper and said "PLEASE give us a second chance!" We promise it will be BETTER!"

By the way, for any sexist men (Like John McCain) who actually BELIEVE that women enjoy being raped, let me extend this analogy to appeal to the latent homophobe in you "manly men":

These folks have no compunction against "bending YOU over" and "making YOU squeal like a pig", to borrow a line from Deliverance!

(Because I want this to be a frightening and graphic reference, I'll resist the urge to insert a "lipstick" joke in this paragraph.)

I've often read that many serial rapists hold a victim hostage and force him or her to lure others into captivity.

The Stockholm syndrome -  is a proven psychological response to repeated abuse. The victim actually becomes emotionally attached to the attacker , in many cases believing and actually DEFENDING his actions.

THIS is what concerns me the most, as I watch Sarah Palin and other normally believable and somewhat respectable Republican officials extolling the virtues of their party and candidate.

They are knocking on your door with roses in hand, begging you to ignore their past transgressions!

They'll promise "change and reform" if you'll just unlock the door!

These people have FORCIBLY FUCKED our country for long enough! Please don't let them back in!
