" "[I]n spite of the obvious merits of the [CAFE] standards, the American automobile manufacturers were opposed to the regulations." --Ambassador Stuart E. Eizenstat, testifying before the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on International Relations on Foreign Oil Dependency by the United States, 6/20/02 (These are the same automobile manufacturers who are laying off thousands of workers because the American public is not buying enough of their gas-guzzling behemoths.)

But there is one bit of good news as the 109th Congress adjourns and goes home to face the voters:

" "If the House sticks to its schedule, it will have worked 84 days this year when votes were scheduled, 26 fewer than the Congress that President Truman labeled 'do-nothing' during his 1948 campaign." --Washington Post, 7/30/06

When you consider what this Congress does when it is in session, the less they do--the better. It is no wonder that a recent Newsweek poll (8/13/06) found that 67 percent of Americans are "dissatisfied with the direction of the country." That is why we have elections in America.

On November 7th, all the seats in the U.S. House of Representatives and a third of the Senate seats are up for election. The Republicans have controlled Congress for 11 years, and look at the mess we are in today. Make up your mind to go the polls on election day and help turn America in a new direction.

(Author's Note: I am sure there must be some good, honest Republicans in Congress. Unfortunately, they vote the way they are told and keep their mouths shut; so they are pretty hard to spot.)
