Ryan Lee: Continuity Income and Membership Sites

By Rob Kall

Ryan Lee runs Continuity Forum, a conference that brings together experts on continuity websites and businesses

::::::::

Ryan Lee runs Continuity Summit, a conference that brings together experts on continuity websites and businesses-- which couldn't have existed 15 years ago. But now, there are tens of thousands of them. For example, one mother of five kids, has a site with 1000 members, each paying $20 a month, and it's for people who are paper, scrapbook and "cropping" hobbyists.

I interviewed Ryan because he represents a whole new bottom up and connection driven world of entrepreneurial energy and direction. As they say in his world, people sign up with membership sites for the content and stay for the community. And usually, a lot of the content is community provided or conversations that have been recorded for the community in the form of webinars or conferences.

Rough Interview notes:

Diapers, kids facing death?

first paid membership site  late September 2001

how do you figure out what business to go into?
Ask. Go to blogs, discussion forums, associations and find out what's keeping them up at n ight.
Find out what they're talking about.

if you're not an expert, not a guru, how do you create a site. Answer-- the producer model--

domain name $8 - $9 cost

need a web host-- a virtual landlord, costs $5,  he uses hostgator.com

ryanlee.com/gator

Software for a membership site;  use wordpress.org and go to guru

wishlistmember, digital access pass.
one time fee of $150  to get started.
If you compare it to any other startup business, like starting up a retail store... you're looking at $50-100,000 in build-out costs.

start at facebook, set up a fan page,
use linked in as well. Start driving traffic to your blog. Write articles and say something

Rob began his Bottom-up Radio show, broadcast on WNJC 1360 AM to Metro Philly, also available on iTunes, covering the transition of our culture, business and world from predominantly Top-down (hierarchical, centralized, authoritarian, patriarchal, big) to bottom-up (egalitarian, local, interdependent, grassroots, archetypal feminine and small.)
