Triple Sonnet from a Mighty Whitey: The George Floyd Legacy
By John Hawkins
Op-Ed Poetry: Triple Sonnet from a Mighty Whitey: The George Floyd Legacy. Today it was announced the Floyd family will receive $27 million dollars in compensation for George's murder by the po-lice. Here's my poetic take, for whatever it's worth.

Three Sonnets from a Mighty Whitey: The George Floyd Legacy
by John Kendall Hawkins
One: Andrew Jackson
The phony Andrew Jackson bill George Floyd
foisted on a convenience store to buy
ciggies that would kill him -- what irony!
Killed by black cancer -- race -- Blacks can't avoid.
And AJ, Trump's fave-o slaver prezzie,
full-throated driver of the Trail of Tears --
The Battle of New Orleans brought him cheers --
found the Democrats, folks called him crazy.
Wed to Rachel ("Awful big o' me!" Grins.)
"The Sanguinary Chieftain ate Injuns" --
"No, he hated red meat!" quoth his minions.
The uttered cash papered over his sins.
Maybe George Floyd was found neck deep in knee
for passing fake cash and fake history.
Two: The Choke Hold by Knee
No, George didn't die of emphysema,
but of emphasis of power over,
Black Man Down as a modus o. schema --
a hair-down drunk at war with the sober,
seen as loveable avuncular Sam,
flag-waving, then blamblamblamblamblamblam
and then down go the spooks of our white past,
the trick being to make the old war last.
For all we know Floyd was a damaged soul,
if you remove the hagiography,
hard to tell from a burnished legacy,
but he was a Man, killed by an a**hole.
Choke-holds -- in the eyes of be-breathers --
and next thing you know we're viral seethers.
Three: Blood Money Blues
Today, we're told the Floyd family won
$27 mil for the horror caused
to George, his loved ones, and the Black Nation;
tax-payer blood money that not once paused
the onslaught of Black Men Down. (Khoshoggi's
Saudi family was handsomely repaid
for the disruption. Halas!) Because he's
with Trayvon now, and the others we made
into martyrs of our complicity --
conspiracy-fearists afraid of light --
we hoarse-whisper lies about liberty;
climate change denial; we lack insight.
All the uttered cash is counterfeit:
taxes are our hours, time turned to sh*t.
