I'd like to see Ireland adopt the Bolivarian approach
Thanks for this comprehensive piece as to the critique of Obama it seems extreme given the situation. America is fundamentally WASP/Hebrew in it's work ethic with Catholic theology mollifying that somewhat. South/Latin America has been informed by radical Catholic Liberation Theology so the ground was prepared. It's Latin character is another factor. Obama is working from a different base the question is whether he's making things better or worse. I'd tend to think better though the democratic lobby plainly does not have enough power and needs to expand from the Latin base. Meanwhile the real issue is the extent to which the corporates have shanghaied Western democracies especially Canada and New Zealand once regarded as flagships for sustainability.
I'd like to see Ireland adopt the Bolivarian approach you describe and to marshal its hydrocarbon project in the interest of the people and sustainability. The abortion debate is however being used to fragment the Left and win Sinn Fein over to a more conservative alliance with Fianna Fail. Progressives must realise that with the morning after pill widely available and pregnancy detectable within 48hrs that the justification for surgical abortion on demand no longer exists. It is more a defining ideological point for the Left the purpose of which is to stamp their project as anti-theistic in character. The interesting thing about the Latin American process of radicalisation is how it incorporated and indeed sprang from radical Church views. One wonders whether socialism is not being used to front a Libertine agenda in developed democracies because the emphasis certainly seems to have shifted from workers rights to the defence of sexual liberties. Socialists have to prioritise their agenda like everyone else.
