W S Merwin, a recent U.S. poet laureate, expressed great concern for, and revulsion towards the imperial crimes of the country of his birth, as early as the 1960s and '70s. In a speech before an audience at SUNY Buffalo, he expressed his views towards free thought and humanity. This influential and powerful speech is discussed in this article.
