On May 1, 2003, in his now infamous "Mission Accomplished" speech, George Bush announced that major combat operations in Iraq have ended. A little more than three weeks later, "Dubya" snatched the seeds of "defeat from the jaws of victory" by disbanding Iraq's 350,000-strong Army and Police Forces; and cutting its members loose with their weapons and unlimited access to 250,000 tons of munitions stockpiled in unguarded ammo dumps throughout the country.
In the interim our "War President" has come up with plan after failed plan for victory in Iraq. To date, he has wasted more than 500 Billion dollars, our national prestige and the lives of more than 3400 of our troops on his misbegotten war. It's apparent that his latest plan is to continue to sacrifice our troops until he can dump the mess he created into the lap of our next president.
Yet, despite his self-evident malfeasance, the president enjoys the unquestioned support of The American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars -- so much so that both veterans organizations equate "support for the troops" with support for George Bush.
Both the "Legion" and the Veterans of Foreign Wars--VFW present their organizations as defenders of The Constitution, yet they fully support a president who is actively engaged in the destruction of our Civil Liberties by authorizing unlawful wiretaps, the opening of our personal mail, the interception of our Internet communications, data mining (including our banking transactions, credit card purchases, and airline travel) and the elimination of the centerpiece of our liberties, the writ of habeas corpus.
Bush believes he, as the "commander in chief," answers to no one - not the American people, not the Congress of the United States and not even the law of the land -- and the national leadership of the American Legion and VFW appear to agree.
Which begs the question: Whose side are they on? George Bush or "we the people?"
