Sally Kern a State Representative of Oklahoma City, told a political group “the homosexual agenda is just destroying this nation” and poses a bigger threat to the U.S. than terrorism”. Her statement has caused a fire storm in the media and has bloggers and new sites buzzing with defenses and protests. In a mainstream media news article about the incident commenter’s have created a heated debate using biblical scriptures to either support or denounce homosexuality. Some have cited that homosexuals will burn in hell because of their sin and that God hates homosexuals.
I am neither a homosexual nor a Christian but I find it hard to believe and accept that God hates homosexuals or any group of people. Regardless of what the Bible or any other Holy Book states, God loves all people and to suggest that God hates a person is the most demeaning and disrespectful thing to do to another human being. God did not make Christians, black, white, brown or even homosexual people for that matter, God made human beings and whether we like it or not we are all part of one big family called the human race, so, why don’t we try and treat our fellow brothers and sisters of the human race with some respect and dignity.
Sally Kern had a right to say what she said because of her constitutional rights but her obligation to the human race, to the public she serves and to both the Christians and homosexuals of her region should have kept those words from falling from her lips. There should be some semblance of unity in her platform as a public servant with a mission to unify during this uncertain economic time instead of dividing the people with hate. Watching hate filled individuals throw scriptures like stones at others makes me glad that I am a spiritual person.
The people of this nation need to come together and close the gap on this divide. Our economy is going to crap, people are loosing homes and jobs and we have men and women dying in a needless war for the sake of the rich. Everyday in the news we have to read atrocious stories of people throwing their kids off of bridges, going in their classrooms and killing innocent people and how thousands are still trying to recover from hurricane disasters. Yet, we will waste our energy on feeding into a pointless battle between religious fanatics and homosexuals. The hatred of homosexuals will not stop the flow of millions of jobs leaving our shores and certainly will not help save homes from sliding into the foreclosure abyss. What this futile and demeaning debate will do is keep the nation distracted from what’s really going on. As long as we are divided and hating one another we will and can be controlled through our hate. We will forget the real issues before us and accidentally vote McCain as our next president.
