Connecting the Dots of Global Warming

Last Friday international scientists released their first report in five years stating that global warming is in fact "very likely" caused by man, and hotter temperatures and rising sea levels will continue for centuries to come leaving little room to question the observation that the increase in greenhouse gases are dominated by human activities thus making it all but impossible to blame the coming catastrophes on act of god or natural forces.

The bottom line is that world leaders were urged to reduce emissions and also prepare to adapt to a warmer world with catastrophic storms and droughts not to mention the resulting regional conflicts over territory, water rights, mass migrations, starvation etc. Although the United States was one of 113 that approved the report from international scientists we are not one of the 45 nations calling for a new environmental body tasked with slowing inevitable global warming and protecting the planet.

The fact of the matter is that although we here in the homeland constitute five percent of the world's population we also produce nearly twenty five percent of the world's greenhouse gases and have no interest in taking drastic steps required to control our emission output. We've been told by this and other administrations that working with the international community to address global warming would cost jobs.

Besides Exxon just made a 40 billion dollar profit participating in and precipitating the problems facing our planet. Protecting the planet obviously would not be in the best interests of their investors. Therein lies the onion in the room because here in America we've been conditioning ourselves to believe how much we care about the future of our children meanwhile we bequeath them a future of suffering for we cannot ever escape the consequences of our actions.

While my perception of our failure to grasp reality may seem somewhat caustic events in Washington earlier in the week support my sarcasm for the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee headed by Rep. Henry Waxman received survey results from federal scientists that showed nearly half felt pressure to eliminate the words "climate change, "global warming" or similar terms included in their work. In essence this administration is saying if they do not acknowledge its existence then global warming does not exist and thus accepting illusion over an inescapable reality.

The survey also reflected that 43 percent of the respondents reported their reports were edited thus changing the meaning of their findings, 46 percent felt administrative requirements impaired climate-related work, and 67 percent said that the environment for federal government climate research is worse now than five years ago.

In response Rep. Waxman has been seeking documents from the Bush administration on climate policy to determine if the White House political staff is inappropriately censoring impartial government scientists to mislead the public by injecting doubt about global warming and its implications.

To date the Bush administration has not complied with those requests and I suspect hell will freeze over before they do for it wouldn't fit their faith based environmental policy and allegiance to the oil industry. Misleading the public seems to be the operating policy for this incompetent and corrupt administration. After all faulty intelligence and cherry picked intelligence both worked in Iraq. It isn't a far stretch from the terrorism of Islamic radicalism to personalize it with the terrorism of losing jobs. It's still terrorism.

I don't claim to have any scientific background. Indeed my understanding of global warming is quite rudimentary but I do know that here in the northeast section of the homeland we are experiencing a week of single digit temperatures and subzero wind-chill factors.

Making the best of a bad situation I'll defer to the assessment of the international scientists by enjoying the freezing weather because global warming is on the way and when I connect the dots between how our government is responding to this impending environmental crisis I draw a picture with the perfect caption: 'bend over and kiss your ass goodbye before the ice melts".
