(Oklahoma City)Who could have known that the green of grass and living plants could mutate into the barren, ugly desert of homophobia and religious intolerance?
The green of money has morphed to the color of blood-red religious fundamentalism it would seem after reading the NY Times story at click here or http://tinyurl.com/yz4svu about a Houston area lawn and garden service.
After agreeing to perform an estimate for a suburban couple, the lawn service pulled up their offer by the roots after learning the new customers are gay and living together in an arrangement the service owners find to be sinful.
A gay man is quoted in the story to the effect that the business owners need to think about the gay contacts they unknowingly encounter, from hairdressers to delivery drivers.
I would NEVER give my money knowingly to any business that uses religion to advertise for customers.
Not content with savaging gay people, the business owners claim they've received threatening emails and phone calls from GAY people! How many dangerous gay people do YOU know? And how many dangerous straight people, huh?
I deeply regret the possibility that any gay person would call or email, what on first appearance seems real to the mind of a homophobe, fulfilling their fantasies, to be threatening calls or emails as alleged in the story.
Leave this tactic to the GOPers, who posing as agent saboteurs have done and will do this sort of thing. When they get caught, they pay the fine and go on to do it again during the next cycle.
It has been established that GOPers around the country made repetitive, annoying robo-phone calls to Demo candidates's districts this past election cycle, hoping to suppress the Demo vote for that candidate. A case in point is the 3rd House District race for Congress from Nebraska, Scott Kleeb, http://www.scottkleeb.com/ who lost by a 10% gap to the GOPer opponent.
It was also done earlier this year to Jim Roth, http://www.roth4commissioner.com, candidate for a second term to the Oklahoma County Commission. Mr. Roth won his race with a 63% majority. The alleged culprit, Tim Pope, a former Oklahoma legislator and professional homophobe, faces a court case brought by Oklahoma's aggressive
Attny-General, Drew Edmondson, for the illegal use of political phone calls, and faces a fine of several million dollars.
Take the time to find out if your money is funding the kind of intolerance that would jeopardize your equality and your civil rights. It sounds like a stretch to think that something as common as yard work would make such a commotion as this example.
Remember, however, that it's the common, everyday activities that make up our society's view of our surroundings--gay or straight, physically or mentally--and is the glue that makes our society work.
Think of Rosa Parks just wanting to ride the bus, African-Americans wanting to buy lunch and use the same water fountains as whites, women wanting to vote, inter-racial couples wanting to marry--it's the commonplace events everyone can relate to that can make our own gay equality come true.
