Truman for Congress: A Voice for the Young Voter

By       (Page 1 of 2 pages)   No comments
Message Jack Truman
Today's young voters are being ignored by our government.

It's a fact: Congress is not looking out for our next generation. Our current government sickens and disgusts me. I cannot begin to tell you how much I despise the way our administration is looking out for young adults.

This week, the front page of the Springfield News-Leader had a great story about how today's young voters are concerned about key issues in this election year. A new survey shows that 80 percent of adults between the age of 18 and 30 are registered voters. That's a high percentant. That alone shows that young people care about what is going on in our country. The same surveys and studies show that their top issues are education, the economy, Iraq, health care and national security.

Think about this: this group of voters now account for 25% of the electorate vote. And by 2015, this generation of voters will account for one third of the electorate. That's a huge percentage. Yet our government is not putting any focus on the young voter.

I'll tell you why. In this candidate's opinion, our current government does not care about the future. It's all about money, fear and power. All they are doing right now is looking out for themselves and big business. They do not care about the future of our country. I am not saying our entire government is this way. But this is a Republican controlled administration. And the majority of our Congressmen and Washington does not care about the average person. They're protecting the big bucks. And this has to stop. We have to start looking out, protecting, preserving and preparing our country for the next generation of Americans. That's what America is about. Working together and being united.

Let's just look at the top priority for young voters: Education and College:

The Bureau of Labor and Statistics estimates the demand for jobs requiring a college education will increase 22% in the next 10 years. And worldwide, the U.S. no longer ranks first in higher education. We only rank 16th in the world for high school graduates and 9th overall for college graduates. And for every 100 9th graders, only 18% go on to receive a degree. Only 1 out of every 10 that are Latino or African American students receive a college degree.

According to studies, over the next 15 years, college enrollment will increase 20%. And the largest percentage will come from low income minorities.

What is being done about this? Nothing.

This government needs to start addressing our young generation and focus on education and the future of our country. Being a former college professor, and a college graduate, I know the importance of education.

And change needs to be done. Now.

Young voters....you have a voice right here. And you need an independent voice in Washington. I will fight for you. And I will do everything I can to look out for you, and the people, and get our priorities back to where they need to be. You are our future: and we need to start getting ready for that.

Let's work together to make a change, and make history this fall.

Thank you,
