Some days ago, I attended a gathering in support of those who are suffering in
today's war-torn Syria. The meeting was held in the Berkeley City College, in the
basement. Food was served, although I didn't eat much; my appetite was
ruined before I had a chance to eat.
What is going on in the Middle East is bad enough. The United States has supported apartheid in Palestine for almost a century now, and the entire region, given the way it was designed, has become unstable. It is true that Christians, Zionists, and Muslims are all murdering one another in the name of their religion. But others are manipulating that history, I believe, to exacerbate tensions and disorder in the region. They're doing so for many reasons, but the two primary ones are control over the world's natural resources and world domination .
A documentary movie was shown at the gathering I've mentioned. I found it quite disturbing. I'll never forget the image of a middle-aged man who, in the aftermath of a SCUD missile attack, stood in the middle of the rubble that used to be his domicile and mourned his ENTIRE FAMILY that had been buri ed in it . He wailed as people gathered around him, supporting him
in his unimaginable grief. Again, if the same event were unfolding in our own country, we'd be
losing our collective minds over it. When it happens half-a-world away, however, in a place the people entrusted with our well-being decided to
turn into a parking lot, it's no more than "sad." Or "tragic."
In reality, though, it's "terrorism"! And if we aren't doing something to help stop it, we're enabling it. Right? Isn't that always the battle cry of corrupt politicians, whenever
they want to move the sheep from one side of the pen to the other? Isn't it also the rationalization you would expect from our C.I.A., and others, who have been in that region stirring the pot and trying to achieve a certain goal? Our fingers are already in the pie, but we act like we're not involved, until we get involved. Why? To exploit the region for its natural resources and gain a healthy profit.

I don't know which drugs are more lucrative: the opiates in Afghanistan or the oil west of that region. What I do know, though, is that we want both, because we have a major addiction to
both. Sure, we run our mouths as though we actually want to stop
the drug flow that supplies our addicts. But do we really want to stop it? Wrong! We need the users to
remain Junkies. Otherwise the cash flow stops...and so do the murder
and carnage, which constitute the control mechanism.
For me, it's very easy to understand what's going on. Since the Shah, we have been screwing with that region of the
world, starting little grass fires all over the place; and when those
grass fires burn out of control, we then act shocked and horrified, and consider ourselves victims. We demand "justice," but do we even know the definition of that word?
What we actually do is install puppet regimes that end up killing the people we purport to be "saving"--all in an effort to seize control of their oil
fields and profit from the clean-up process and
rebuilding made necessary by the destruction we've caused.
The real evil in our doing this is the complicity and duplicity it involves. Seeing atrocity and going along with it means that you are enabling the process that leads to i t. At the same time, you are playing both sides
against the middle--squeezing them. This is what the German people were told following the Nazi atrocities in World War II, as the U.S. military led them through the death
camps. The same point was drilled into our heads as kids in the Los Angeles public school system, considered at the time one of the tops in the nation .
The point also applies to the average individual who sees injustice, or atrocity, and neither says nor does anything about it. Sorry. It's a matter of "What's good for the goose is good for the gander." Inaction is an act of "terrorism,"
if you're doing nothing to stop the terrorism from happening. And, for
me, being a writer, using words and all, I never have bought into the conventional meaning attributed to "terr orism." Terrorism of some sort has been going on on this planet
since people realized they could steal someone else's wealth, power, or resources through
deception and, often, by presumed religious right. This is not my opinion. The historical record demonstrates it, and I'm only pointing it out.
Just ask the Native Americans about terrorism. I'm sure they could tell you stories about it that go back centuries.
It seems to me we foster fraudulent reasons for taking things from others out of simple greed. It's no more complicated than that. Our culture pushes the lies and we as a culture embrace it . We really don't want to stick our necks out all that much. We don't mind giving a couple bucks to the cause, but to actually stand up and put your rear on the line? Yeah, sorry.... Gotta watch Breaking Bad this week.
Our
military men and women, of course, do have to stick their necks out, to the point of putting their lives on the line. But they too are being
manipulated and forgotten. I'm not anti-military. I'm
anti-Military Industrial Complex, where half the money in our discretionary budget is
spent. That spending is reckless, insane, and irresponsible, especially
considering the waste and death it causes and is causing. The averages suggest, in fact, that at this very moment another SCUD has landed and killed a
lot of desperate Syrians.
