When DeLay's forces were moving lines on a map in Austin, they were eroding a basic, fundamental right that was hard-earned in southeast Fort Worth. The political power that took us 40 years to build took DeLay minutes to dismantle and reassemble into a district that runs to the Oklahoma border, taking our political muscle with it. I pray that the justices will restore our voting strength by replacing the DeLay-designed map. I was proud to represent southeast Fort Worth at this hearing, and I was compelled to tell our story. The sacrifices and struggles of those who came before me will permit me to do no less. |
