(1 comments) Friday, March 4, 2011 Time to Close New York's Office of Mental Health by D. J. Jaffe - City JournalSHARE
Andrew Cuomo's New York State mental health commissioner has abandoned making serious mental illness a priority of the department, and instead turned it into a provider of social services for the 'worried-well'. As a result there are twice as many mentally ill in Riker's Island jail than in all NYS run psychiatric hospitals combined. Many more mentally ill are going homeless and becoming psychotic as a result of their inability to get care. Given what we now know about mental illness, this author suggests Andrew Cuomo eliminate the New York State Office of Mental Health and turn over important functions to the Department of Health. This would save money, improve care, and keep patients and public safer. The author is founder of Mental Illness Policy Org.

Saturday, January 15, 2011 Uncivil Liberties for Mentally Ill (Loughner Giffords)SHARE
"How can so much degradation and death - so much inhumanity - be justified in the name of civil liberties? It cannot. The opposition to involuntary committal and treatment betrays a profound misunderstanding of the principle of civil liberties. Medication can free victims from their illness - free them from the Bastille of their psychoses - and restore their dignity, their free will and the meaningful exercise of their liberties."
Widely acknowledged by advocates to be the single best op-ed ever written on Civil Liberties for mentally ill. A must read for civil libertarians, libertarians, advocates for mentally ill, policy-makers and anyone interested in the role of civil liberties in treating mental illness
